Just got me a realistic STA 2080

Well my ss amp made all the speakers sound well smeared and indistinguishable from one another, a tin can fisher and a good wharfedale both sounded about the same.
So realistic 2080 how is it.
Is there any mods for getting it to be better, and is there a standard check I have to do and replace cos its 30 years old.
It has 1 light out on one of the face dials - the signal strength one if I recall. Light only, the meter works.
Cool.

Ol' gear...

Nice find snagging your STA.
I sold Realistic gear when it was in its heyday (Seventies).
Radio Shack contracted out with Pioneer and I believe Sansui and Kenwood.
My best guess is yours is a Kenwood based unit. These series of receivers are robust & virtually indestructable.
I would suggest getting the correct lamp for your meter(Maybe hard to find), and quite probably she needs some new Power Supply capacitors, as they are thirty years old now.. Don't be tempted to crank up the values on the capacitors....but you can bump up the VOLTAGE values.... no harm done. Don't be afraid to spend a little extra for "name brand" caps.....just don't over do it.
A technician could dial in your tuner...but you can do the rest.

Ok I figured it out (yes operator error - sorta).
That cross bridge between the pre out and right was not there ... I swapped it from the left to the right pins and voila, only right, no left.
So I need a hanger wire bent into that shape ?
Cool.

Just make yourself a short RCA-RCA patch cable. It will likely sound better than the folded steel,

There is a whole lot you can do to soup this puppy up... as Richard suggests you start with elecos. Modern caps are better than vinatge, and those old resistors drift in value.

But before doing any but basic main you need a schema (even if you make it yourself) so you can decide what to do. Also whether you want to "restore" it and maintain collectors value, or you want to make it the best it can be.

I think I need it to be the best it can be, however I opened it and I find it really scary. Solid state stuff, like my 60 inch tv didn't look this bad. This was painfully cluttered inside it.
I have found pics of it on line, but I'll post pics of mine.
Thanks for the ideas.
Cool.

Anyway this amp sounds so nice compared to the kenwood. I think its a great amp, now back in the early 80's were they trying to make amps that sounded and worked like tube amps ?
Anyway, sounds like there is an extra few instruments in a song.
Cool.

Hi Srinath I have STA-2080 service manual, let me know if i can provide you parts numbers.

Srinath, You have a great receiver on you hands.

I purchased one new back in the day (1979) when I was 14 years old and made my own speakers with Radio Shack raw components and mom was not happy. Let me tell you this unit can belt out Motorhead Ace of Spades LOL. Must say as I was reviewing your thread I had to laugh when you had one channel down. First thing I thought of was the Jumper bars. I always thought it had a lot of similarities with Pioneer offerings of the day.

I still have mine in it's original box up in the attic with the original manual & schematic. Come to think of it my 1979 speakers are still in use in the basement with the hot-tub. (newer drivers)

Currently my 2080's protection circuitry is kicking in but I have recently found a guy that works on vintage stereo components at a reasonable rate and seems to know what he is doing.

b767, I could certainly use a copy of that service manual. Will PM you.

I luv these old receivers and amps. Just picked up my 5th Nikko Alpha amp this morning and had a trip down memory lane and that's how I found this thread.

Take Care
