Hi All,
Soon I will be having the venerable AR-79B on my bench:
ARCDB - D-79
It's going to need a recap (going to be tricky) and I need some advice on caps. Of course, this guy wants great caps, within reason.
It needs 21 600uf 350v caps, and this range is outside of most cork-sniffer brands. My options:
- Straight from Hong Kong on ebay: $44 for all.
- A lot of standard brands are $7-$15 each
- Found a few in the $50 range (that's over $1k just there).
- The closest Black Gates are $280 each: no way.
Can anyone steer me in a good direction? This is a bit out of my norm.
I'm also assuming only the 680uf value will be available, which is fine AFAIK.
Thanks in advance!

Get in touch with ARC and see what they have or suggest. Since most OEMs buy parts in quantity they might pass the savings on to you. As an example Peavey USED to be a great source for Motorola/ON transistors but their prices have gone up in the past couple of years.

Does the customer insist the cap array looks stock? I had a pair of D-150's that I put the power supply into separate enclosures.... in the day before this became fadish!!

It's very long odds that the stuff from HK is utter garbage, sorry.
DigiKey stock # P10666-ND is a Panasonic T-HA series part rated for 3000 hours at 105o C. These "puppies" go for just under $10 each, in the quantity you need. Panasonic 'lytics enjoy a good reputation. I suspect that this is the sort of cap. whose cost/performance ratio is what you want. You might have to do some PCB drilling, in mounting (4 pins).
BTW, ARC tends to price gouge. 🙁
Thanks for the responses. I Googled ARC Electronics and got MANY websites with that name. Which is the right one?
And Eli, I never implied that the HK caps were garbage. Heck, if the amp were mine, I might consider them, but I doubt my client would. Good to hear about the Panasonics.
Thanks again.
