Burning/running in times?

Howdy folks!

Would anyone out there like to have a shot at answering my question below?



I'm wondering what the average burn in period or running in times are needed/expected for brand new equipment to release their full potential?

Starting at the top:

1. Solid state amplifiers.
2. CD players.
3. Speakers.
4. Speaker cables.
5. Interconnects.

Is there a general rule of thumb that could be quoted?

Rule of Thumb: Anything mechanical (speaker drivers, phono cartridges) benefits from run-in time. Anything electrical more than likely does not.

Thank you for your input. Is there anything to back up your theory other than opinion? It's just I see from reading other threads that folk say Black Gate caps never fully burn in and correct me if I'm wrong, they fit in the 'electrical' bracket?

I'm not disagreeing with you at all, I'm just looking for a broad opinion which only time will release.

This is our experience with stuff that we have associated with.

Thanks for your reply. By saying the 'stuff we have associated with', was there an obvious audible improvement in the components you have had associations with or was it just a minor improvement?

I have had many a speaker that sounded rather harsh and bright when new, after 4-5 hours they seemed to mellow. Although, some people say Monitor Audio's offerings are extremely bright and the B&W's are not, I found the 685's to be far too bright and after 30+ hours, they still have not lost their sharpness.

Well, let's just say that I design audio for a living, have dozens of designs in the marketplace, and this is the collective experience of my associates and me. Some associates were cable designers.
In a serious design comparison, it is almost impossible to get around break-in, except by Cryoing. This sometimes works for some products.

I wasn't doubting your offering at all, just looking for specifics or failing that an average answer from the majority. If it is 30+ hours for a solid state then good, my 10 hours old has less 'punch' than judy.

It seems to be most important when we use really expensive electrolytic caps and really high quality wire. It is like when we want to run a listening comparison with what we have. Normally, I personally could care less, but many do. It does seem that continuous break-in is sometimes necessary. As we speak, we are running a break-in on 2 JC-1 power amps, and it has been weeks. I am hoping for ultimate success, but at the moment, two other designs sound slightly better. Why, I have no idea.

What is to be expected of 'breaking in' equipment? I'm hoping for dynamics and drive or should I say 'punchy' bass notes. I ask as my new 2nd system of a low/mid price bracket has plenty of low notes but lacking in, dare I say it 'whallop'. I know it is a crude word but I was hoping for a bit more of something that a word cannot really describe.

Well, where do I start? At the beginning I think!

I started to read your pdf from the beginning, 4 sentences into No.1 (cables) I hit the close icon. Based on personal experience, I can say without reading it in whole that it is a whole load of rubbish from an editor/author who I presume buys his audio equipment from the supermarket.

I purchased some cheap QED qontour 2's and some Atlas Equator 2's just to see if there was any difference between a £20 interconnect and a £50 interconnect. Let me say that side by side with the same track and volume, the resonating symbols with the QED were hardly audible, yet the Atlas offered a clear as day offering which was almost over-powering.

Spend £70 and see for yourself, there is a huge difference.

My answer, NO, your car doesn't care about the hose it was filled with, but it does care what substance came from the hose.

The better/cleaner and higher octane the fuel, the greater combustion and more efficiant cycle equalling better performance over poor fuel.

Cleaner/better supply of fuel whether petrol or AC = more efficiant output. Simple really.

That's more of a true comparison between AC (fueling electronic equipment so to speak) and a car. Not some silly 'hose' nonsense.
 
None of the ss amps, cd players or cables I have had ever sounded any different in any way from brand new to years old. Some types of capacitors may benefit from a short settling in period though but then those are probably the same ones which age and need replacing after a few years to get performance back up to spec.
On the other hand different types of cdp, amps and op amps sound dramatically different even if they measure the same or very similar.
As for cables I currently use very similarly constructed cables (10swg ofc in clear jackets) on my left and right hand speakers. One is 20 years old, the other brand new
and the difference is nil.

And while JC is throwing around opinions (thats all they are), heres mine. I dont care if youv been designing "hi end" audio gear (thats well accepted) for a hundred years, opinions about "fringe" effects such as cable burn in or beybee filters is still just opinion until you can show the numbers or at least do some double blind testing. And come to think of it (and this is whats really throwing up the flags) I dont think I have ever heard JC say "that has no effect", every single thing effects the sound, from resistor burn in to quantum tunneling and micro diodes in speaker cable. I dont have a problem with peoples opinions (hey thats all this is), but I do have a problem when people try to put there opinions across as fact, just because they "design gear". The condescending attitude is almost too much to bear. Please dont believe ** just because of they way it is put across.
 
Learn, or remain in ignorance. The opinions that I give are as true today, as they were 30 years ago. It makes no difference to me, or anyone seriously in audio, IF you are so brainwashed by ABX propaganda, that you don't trust yourself. I trust myself, and others, so I make a living in something that I love. How about you?
