I have one I'm going to work on for a friend. The priority is to optimize 2-channel SACD sound.Does anyone know whether the clock is next to the DACs or is far away?
Don't know about any details yet, I just took off the cover yesterday.
Let me know if you've made any progress so far.

I have not started yet, because I do not know whether it is worth modding. I would like to know where the clock is. Do you have the service manual?
Nope. Can't tell where the clock is yet. Anything with opamps after the DAC is worth modding IMHO. Not to mention cleaning up the digital 5v and/or 3.3v supplies.I have not started yet, because I do not know whether it is worth modding. I would like to know where the clock is. Sure, but to a point. I would like to have some idea on whether the clock would become the performance limiter in this player.

Every CD player I've put a better clock in has improved the sound. I'm sure this player would benefit too. I haven't worked on DVD/SACD players, but they shouldn't be that different in their need for a better clock.

The jitter performance of the player depends on the location of the clock. If the clock is far away, the jitter cannot really be made very low. The clock becomes the limiting factor. Please post what you find out regarding the clock location.
Ok, but what's your definition of "far away"?. 2 inches, 1ft, or....???
And then there's the option of mounting the new clock closer, if it's feasible.
Within a couple of inches of a DAC is good. DVD players sometimes have clocks on a different board. That is too far.

Unfortunately, it appears that is indeed the case. It's not on the board with the DACs (unless it's on the bottom). I worked on a 47ai and the clock was on the video board, which I'm almost certain is the same situation with this player.
