I've got a set of Hammond 1609s, and a set of Olsons from the 70s along with a few strays that I'm playing with for my 6P1P PP amp.
It looks like the best fit from EDCOR is the CXPP25-MS-8K which is a 25W transformer. P-P impedance is below 10K (Ideal for 6P1P-EV for output power) and will result in less power, but should also result in lower THD if I understand O.H. Schade.
Also the larger transformer will keep me in the more linear portion of the BH curve since I'm only running 10W. I could also go with CXPP25-8-5K and use the 4 ohm output with an 8 ohm speaker to get 10K P-P loading, and could try Parallel Push Pull with the 8 Ohm tap and get around 20W out for four tubes. Or am I off the mark?
Does anyone have another suggestions while I'm playing with iron?
Plitron looks like they are higher power.
I'm selling all my home brewing equipment so now is the time to make investments in tubes and iron.

Whatttttt!!!!!
How will you ever enjoy your diy hifi gear if you are not a little chemically altered first???

Sven,
Are you trying to decide which transformer to use that you already own, or are you open to suggestions as to other transformers to try out? If this is the case, where are you located? The shipping costs can certainly be a factor when you're dealing with fairly heavy gear.
Best Regards,
TerryO
I live in Johnson City TN (USA).
I'm open to trying other transformers in addition to the ones I already have.

Sven,
Here's a few that are highly regarded:
Magnaquest
Tango
Silk
Lundahl
James
Onetics
I'd probably look into the Onetic's line, if for no other reason than Bud Purvine (BudP) is on this forum and is readily accessible. Do a search on diyaudio and you'll be able to read several discussions that he took part in. The Onetics transformers are World Class and some of the top builders use his Iron.
(Disclaimer: I know Bud and we're on good terms, but my recommendation is not based on that factor.)

IMHO, Plitron is on top of the list. Expensive, but very good. The toroid configuration allows for very high magnetic efficiencies, and also has the benefit of containing the magnetic field. The specialist line is also very interesting (I have the cathode feedback model).
I'll have to check those out. I have limited resources (like most) but would like to try at least one more set of transformers.
The problem I have is I'm looking at 8-10W output and most transformer designers don't support this power level. I can use larger (20W-30W) transformers, but pay a premium for them.
I guess most amps are in the 20-30W range to support lower efficiency speakers.
Thanks.

Got 3 sets of those... + a set in Chris' Wright Mono 7s. Nice.
Have been promised an amp with Plitron OPTs, looking forward to it too.

Some more to consider...One-Electron, and SP Wound components Ltd.
I had a good talk with the fellows at SP wound, very helpful!
Jack at Electraprint is another good choice...more than willing to chat with.

Rick,
I don't know anything about One-Electron or SP Wound, but I forgot about Electraprint, which a late friend (who was an absolute whiz with tube amp design) recommended highly.

If you are just having fun, experimenting and such, don't spend your money on top performance level OPT's. Edcore, Hammond and James, if you can find an inexpensive set, would be my first choices, and none of them have any thing to apologize for, sonically or build wise.
Once you have an amp figured out and know what you need, then come and talk to those of us hungry to slip many dollars out of your wallet. As an example, a 10 watt pair of level one OPT's, custom designed for your end needs, will be about $80 each from me. They are actually worth the money, as are the products from Magnequest, Electraprint, Lundahl, Slagle and Plitron. But, not until you have your circuit stable and have worked on passive parts quality levels. Then the transformer, which is 90% of what is wrong with a tube amp and 70% of what is right, will actually be a worthwhile upgrade.

ive used the 60w & 100w edcors -- the high quality ones not the guitar open frame ones -- and they are exceptional. better than any scott or eico old school transformer i have and 99% good enough for most audiophiles. if you dont get them sounding good, it's your design, not the transformers. considering the price, nothing comes close. why pay more?
Thanks all. It looks like the Edcors are easiest to get and I may try a pair of them.
I'm considering the CXPP10-MS-5K but I need a 8-12K transformer so I could just put my 8 ohm speakers on the 4 ohm tap and use it. Not optimum since the 16 ohm tap is probably wound with finer wire than the 8 and 4 ohm taps, but it should work fine.
On the other hand, the CXPP25-MS-8K could be used and should provide less distortion with a pair of 6P1Ps. In addition, I could use this transformer for a Parallel PP amp with four 6P1Ps by moving to the 16 ohm tap. Again the wire size issue.
The only source for James I've found is OCTAVE out of Malaysia.

For push-pull, I want to try the Antek toroidal OPT's
Antek - Your reliable source of transformers, power supplies, and more. .

Just bought a pair of CXPP25-6-7.6K Edcors today for my new EL84 push-pull design.
(p.s. it uses an LL1540 transformer for the phase splitter, so I also bought some Edcor PC10K/10K to compare!)
UGH! Three week lead time!

In the transformer business, three week lead time is incredibly fast. I never quote less than eight.

Hi,
Keeping the safety of the device in mind, I think it is wise to go with a transformer supporting a higher capacity than the required 20 to 30 watts. LiteFuze 50 Watt Step Down Travel Voltage Converters available from LiteFuzeVoltageConverters.com will be just right for your model.
