I got given these and have no idea where they came from, what they are used for etc. I did take the backs off to see what was inside. Pictures below. Any thoughts appreciated.

That's a speaker. And an enclosure and some fiberglass.
You say "...these things...". Does that imply a pair? I just love the look of that era in cabinetry. Have you had a listen?

I remember those being sold as satellite speakers for consoles back in the early 70's in the "golden era" of department stores.
Sorry, can't remember the brand 🙁
Cheers!

Haha I know that. What I meant was does anyone know anything about them? Have you seen them before? If so do you know where they were made?? I havent listened yet though. The fullrange drivers look like they are in ok nick. All I need is a record to go with the other stuff they came with.....pics below.

what are the numbers on the back of the magnet? - probably a manufacturing code, you can often get the maker and date from these
Just did a search and came up with this:

Looks like they were made by phillips in 1968!

You lucky bugger... alnico philips full-range. IIRC a couple different models 9710 springs to mind. I sold 3 pair of these for a friend's wife, fetched a couple hundred bucks a pair.
Box is likely diy.
There is at least 1 thread on these here.

Yea well I might have to sell them if things dont start picking up soon! This recession never ends!!!!

Yea thats true. I had a play with the turntable last night, and found the belt was missing and the speed brake was broken! Is this record player worth fixing?
Its a pioneer pl514 by the way.
I was going to ask whether it was a 514 or a 518. Yes, it is worth fixing. If any of the semi-auto is broken, just rip it all out. This is my favorite budget table (well 512 (full manual) is but they are harder to come by). My local dealer has belts if you can't find one locally.
