Hi Naveen
I have been making drivers for 6 years, though not many. I only design after i get a specific requirement and if that requirement is not met by a readily available & affordable driver.
I agree its much easier and practical for most guys to tweak a x-over or box to suit someone's needs....but when the affordable drivers in india don't have a few of the most necessary features i sit down and design my own. though its expensive but as i don't do it for money its all learning, fun & satisfaction.....
I also agree there are a few sweet sounding drivers which are affordable but i have a feature list in my mind which needs to be met before i start to test or listen to a driver.
My guru told me once " a driver that measures good might sound good or bad, but the one that measures bad will sound bad ".....i don't think i have audiophile type ears so i have learned to trust my instruments........
The list of necessary feature to be in a mid bass driver 1) Treated paper cone or something simple to work with 2) Copper sleeve 3) Flux stabilization 4) Vented pole (if dust cap used) 5) Vented space below the spider or vented spider 6) non conductive high temp. former 7) Low Le voice coil 8) Non ferrous basket 9) Qe<.40 10) Lin x-max 6 to 7mm p-p. 11) Fr. Resp atleast 45 - 3000hz +/- 3dB
a few images of drivers i make....for details please mail me at sumitdutta77@yahoo.com

fantastic. i will email you and then maybe we can take it from there.
Superb. Between you drivers and Viren bakshi's tube amps one can get some lovely stuff in India without having ot worry about import or affordability (a la Cadence).
Sumit: Your work is impressive and painstaking - the units obviously measure great and probably sound just as good. If your drivers and cabinets could be made with some attention to fit, finish and aesthetics, overall WAF (wife-acceptance factor) could also be made comparable to their technical merit - and there's no reason why they cannot command a premium price in the market, a la Cadence Audio or Laya Acoustics.
Thanx naveen & Linuxguru
" If your drivers and cabinets could be made with some attention to fit, finish and aesthetics, overall WAF (wife-acceptance factor) "
I agree completely...but let me tell u my problem.....as for the drivers - it takes me 4 - 6 months to design a new driver to my own expectations. After that kind of time and lots of destroyed motors spiders coils cones etc etc I generaly forgive myself for not making the driver look cool.......as I don't charge my R&D cost from my customers and this they know...they don't mind as far as they sound good...
Just an ex - for the mid bass unit i spent more than Rs55000 on ( measurment equip + hardware + software + imports ( cone, coil, cone coating material ) + taxes etc etc ) ---- As speaker related work is not my source of bread and butter my price for making such a driver is Rs2500. ( cost price for me Rs2300 ) --- I hope u under stand......
As far as the cabinet goes i am very bad at making them myself and the local carpenters seem to be worse ( don't even understand dimentions in mm, only want in Inches ).....
I try hard to make my cabinet internals with no compromise

and Viren Bakshi's Lyrita Acoustics..seems like guys like Arasu, Shirke and Bakshi are changing the face of Indian hi end audio.
A long bump up - I just took a pic of Amandeep's imported Onkyo driver, mounted in his locally-assembled cabinet, branded-'Tekniks'. Unfortunately, those drivers are now sold out, but he has a smaller imported 4" driver, unknown brand, but very well constructed, for Rs.125 now - I'll post a pic later.
Here's a pic of the 4.5" Onkyo, assembled in cabinet:

Congratulations Sumeet,
It is nice to know that u r doing such a nice job.
U hv mentioned about XBL-2 motor.
tell us how u hv done it.
It is a patented technology & how u calculated?
This is because the calculations r not available except u buy licence.

There is new 18" pro driver which will be shortly available in India.
This is designed in India & made in China
I think this is the first pro driver specially designed for Indian conditions.
i saw pictures of drivers & it's assembly process.
right from high quality extended pole magnet assembly to special spider, non pressed paper cone & inside out wound 4 layer copper voice coil.
It is with dual 220mm Y35 magnet & dual spider.

Yes, chinese magnets are mostly cheap grade. But the motors available in LR market are not optimized either. If u use a driver designing tool u can optimize the structure. I have achived upto 1.47Telsa in gap using 180mm magnet.
What u could do to improve the motor is to buy good quality iron and machine the top and bottom plates out of it. The plates available in LR are made from scrap iron and have lot of impurities (lead, zinc,tin......and may be whole of the periodic table).
If u want u can also use NIB magnets, available now a days, but u get the cheapest grade N35.
I sometimes buy ferrite magnets from Arnold magnetics. But their grading is totally different AC1 to AC12

I know the biggest magnet supplier to many reputed companies in India.
But they import & sale Y25 grade in bulk quantities.
The reason : this companies want cheap, cheap & just cheap.
Y 30 is really very difficult to get.

hi palesha,
some of the sellers in lajpat rai market say they have the y53 grade.but others are saying no one is importing y35 only y20 or y25.
so what to do .
