I've got a California Audio Labs Delta transport that just died. It was working flawlessly in my backup system and no longer works after sitting for a month.
Yes, the unit powers up and all functions seem fine. With the cover off, when a disc is inserted the laser attempts to focus but the disc doesn't spin.
Is there any way to check to see if the laser diode is operating?
It is my understanding that the disc won't spin if the laser can't focus on the disc. Is this correct?
Any suggestions as to what else may be wrong and what I might check?
If I had to guess, the transport looks to be made by Technics. The cd tray says CR2 at the rear. Most of the chips have the Technics name on them.
Silkscreened on the main board are also CU3C and RJB1123A.
Does anyone know for certain who built this transport? Also, what the specific model number is and where I might be able to purchase one?
What about any other cd player models that also use the same transport that I might be able to pickup used?
Finally, does there happen to be an upgraded mechanism that might interchange and replace this one?
I'll attach several pics so you know a bit more..

That disc tray look the same as in my Technics SLPG 300.

Wes/Wagner Catalogue .
Wes Components list it at AUS$83.75.
The spin motors on all these machines can develop dead spots on the spin motor commutator causing non starting of disc rotation.
Try giving the disc a flick during initialisation and maybe it will work - if so let me know and I will tell you how to cure this.

This is the same exact mechanism that I have in my Adcom GCD-750, which I'm having short-range skipping problems with. I thought I would get the whole Traverse Deck when I ordered this part(RAE0113Z) the unit skips a little ahead and then sometimes backwards. I'm thinking this could be a motor problem?

guys, I have this same transport. I haven't been able to find much documentation. I'm curious what I should look for to find (if) an i2s signal can be brought out on this unit... my guess is it's not possible, but I figured I'd ask while I have it apart.

Second - CAUTION to anybody planning to do this - the part numbers used for all delta transports are not all the same. Not all are REA0113Z! Mine looks to be RAE0111Z.

Another caution -
I received the part RAE0111Z from Electronix today; it is only a small sub-assembly of the larger deck pictured in links of my previous post. It is only the laser (about the size of a US quarter, see attached photo), not the larger assembly (about 2" by 3") that includes the spindle motor that I had expected based on the pictures. I believe the spindle motor is most likely the source of my transport's problem.
In fairness to Electronix, the linked pictures are NOT from their site. They list only part numbers, and they have agreeed to a return and refund.
I am not sure, part number wise, of how to distinguish the smaller from larger part. Anyone pursuing this fix should be cautious about what they are actually buying

I have e-mailed a few electronic parts houses on the net but no luck. It looks like I will be forced to send it to a repair house to have it done seeing the part is "Unatanium". If someone knows where I can purchase the Traverse Assembly, please let me know. I am sure silica would like to know too.

I can now confirm that "complete with mechanism" from www.dalbani.co.uk includes the laser pickup plus the assembly with spindle moter, transverse moter (not sure of proper name) and gears that move the laser. I purchased one from them and installed it in in my CAL Delta. So far so good, none of the previus sporadic read problems have occured after about five hours of playing.
The package was sent from the UK, arrived in a week.
I am not sure of the root cause of the original problem. I suspect that it was either the transverse mechanism binding, or the traverse motor quitting. Lubing the gears (screw) did not solve the problem. Replacing the entire mechanism was in large part an insurance against future failure of any other components. This mechanism is hard to find now, maybe impossible later. After the swap I have a 15 year old player with brand new moving parts (excluding drawer mechanism). Good for another 15 years?
The two most difficult parts of this swap were separating the mechanism from its circuit board, and putting the drawer mechanism together. The motors are soldered to a small circuit board. The four motor terminals must be de-soldered from the board to make the swap. The drawer has a white rack gear that must be positioned properly for it to engage with the pinion gear when the drawer closes. Some trial-and-error there.
