Broken CDM9 Transport

Hi All,

well, typical Bank Holiday blues!! :bawling: My Arcam Alpha 6 tray jammed. I took the top off, retrieved the disc and thought that was the problem solved. It certainly wasn't!! The tray would barely open and shut. I have removed the transport for investigation and found that half the teeth on the plastic orange turret (which is belt -driven from the motor, mounted on a silver metal plate and secured to the bottom of the transport) have been stripped.😱

Does anyone know of a good supplier of replacement CDM9 transport mechanisms? Or can I just get hold of this one single part (ie the plastic toothed turret)??

Of course, if there is a superior solution that is a bolt on, I'm all ears...!!!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions / pointers you may have.

All the best

Jon

(Hoping not to have to scrap the CD!!)

Don't scrap it or I'll come over to get it ! That is a serious threat

I know the orange gear you speak of and in my memory this gear has been modified. Don't know the part number unfortunately.

They were used in Philips CD9xx series too. Maybe finding one with a dead laser will solve your problem ? Finding a new CDM 9 will be difficult and expensive. There are some german companies that sell them for 140 Euro

But I googled this one for you:

http://www.hinkel-elektronik.de/shop/2418.html

edit: oops, I made a thinking error: the gear is part of the tray not of the laser unit. Please contact Philips for the gear. CD931 and 951 have the same gear.

In my database I found a gear which description says:
Gear from CD-tray (open/close)
Part number Philips: 4822-522-33192
Cost: €4.56 without transport.
Could this be the one?

It's listed in the CD931 & CD951 database.

Here is the best info. I have on replacing the gear.

Good luck with the procedure.

I bought the gear from Robinson Racing Products Tel 209 966 2465 or
www.robinsonracing.com
I found it on the web it is a 32 pitch 10 tooth gear their number RPB
0100 for $3.50. I cut off the remainder of the old gear teeth and
slightly cut down the gear end of the old pulley assembly so that
when I mounted the gear on it (tooth end up) ,I couldplace a clip ring
in the notch of the original metal shaft so that the plulley assembly
wouldn't slide of. You have to cut the pulley back slightly to give
just enouth clearance between the gear and the clip ring that it turns
easily. I got a clip ring from the local Ace Hardwaree for 11 cents.
The material of the old pulley gear assembly is so soft that you can
easily cut if back with a sharp knife. I then used epoxy to glue the
gear on the pulley assembly. Rememger the collar part of the gear must
be mounted down so that the highest gear is furthest from the pulley
wheel. Use slow setting epoxy to give a strong bond. The thing works
fine. John

Thanks Guys! Spot on as usual!

I was amazed to see the pic on Eddie's site - exactly the same problem!! I have attached Eddies Pic and my own for comparison.

I'll be onto Philips tomorrow.

Thanks again. I'm kind of looking forward to re-assembling the kit.

Good News!!

The part is ordered and will be leaving Holland for the UK in a few days. All for a grand total of just over 4 GBP!

For everyone's records, Philips spare parts (for audio, DVD etc) are distributed by Dutchwest Parts. Tel +44 1434 323232. They were great - I also got them to quote for a full transport (in case the re-assembly goes horribly wrong) and it was about 54 GBP (68 incl postage etc).

Thanks again folks. Hugo's part reference number was very helpful - straight to the product. ISTR it was described as a "geared wheel".

.........and a happy end to this tale:

I spent a couple of hours this evening reassembling my Alpha 6 and............drumroll............it works perfectly!

Ha! My first DIY Audio repair.

Now, it was nice and easy to get the DAC board out.........😉

Same problem

Lo and behold, I have the PS Audio Lambda transport with EXACTLY the same problem. I am wondering if there is anyone else out there that has had further luck in getting that orange gear. Is there perhaps a place in N. America that has the little orange gear? Are there other jury-rigged solutions that others have found to be better?

Any and all assistance would be so great.

Jon, was that Holland number to call super easy?

Jon, was that Holland number to call super easy?

The dutch often speak english reasonably well, certainly at companies. Every child learns english here ( and french and german to a lesser extent ).

edit: I reread posts and the given telephonenumber is of a UK company. I guess they won't have any problem with english 😉

Easy-Peasy

Hi Jason,

These guys are in the UK.

They are easy to deal with, and the part was inexpensive.

If you have a problem with them shipping, give me a call.

Cheers

Jon 🙂

Is Philips CD471 mechanics the same?

Hi,
sorry for jumping in (and for being a dull newbye).

I just got an old Philips CD471, which was shipped w/o locking keys.

As a result of hurts, the mechanics refuses to read the CD (Error msg on display). I guess it can't track the data...

The CD spins and the laser lens support moves both on vertical axis and (circularly) on horizontal plane...

Is there a way to fix/understand it? I know it's perhaps too a general question, but, please, forgive me...

Ciao,

Stefano

Hi Jason,

I ordered your part for you. It'll be here in 7-10 days (comes from Holland).

It was about 1.60 GBP plus tax and postage to me. I'll post it on to you - email me your details.

For everyone with these CD transports:

This part is OBSOLETE as of the end of this year. It is on stock at the moment, so might be worth getting hold of Dutchwest and ordering a spare.

Stefano,

I would start by looking inside the CD and see if there is any physical damage to the CD transport. While you're there, make a note of the part number of the unit. There are plenty of digital gurus here who may be able to point you in the right direction.

Cheers

Jon 🙂
