I did this just the other day and the volume is more than what my wife could put up with. I don't have efficient speakers either (somewhere between 87-90 dB).
I think I have changed my philosophy about this. Instead of increasing the gain of the amp, I am actually considering reducing the gain of the amp so I can connect directly from my cd player.
My plan is to have two gain settings - ie stock setting of 6 and another reduced setting possibly 4.3.
To get the gain setting of 4.3 I am planing on putting another 100 Ohm resistor with a switch in parallel in the feedback path this will drop the resistance from 50 to 33, when switched on. This will allow me to switch between the two settings depending on the situation. I find I rarely adjust the volume much anyway so I don't really need a pot. Two settings is probably enough for me.

My vote also goes to circlotron, if you can wait a bit Nelson will be releasing a circlotron, so you possibly might like to combine some of the ideas of Patrick's version with Nelson's version.

I would also consider F3 even though you say you want more power.
I have not tried cd direct, as my cd player lacks volume control. The Pre used here is the B-1, which is a buffer, with little or no gain, so its not much different than the straight in method.

Default Aleph J

HI,
I have completed both F5 and recently AlephJ.
The amp sound different and you may want to try. It has more gain with aleph
It runs hotter with Aleph.
The complexity to build is about the same.

Cheers.
Try the Aleph 3. They are a great match for FR speakers. I also have them playing with the OB by Martin King. Sounds great.

Default Aleph J

I bought Aleph J boards from Peter Daniel, but have not seen any Aleph J service manual put out by Mr. Pass like it is with other amps. I have seen Aleph J schematics, but there are no construction notes by Mr. Pass. Does the circuit not need any notes, so simple?

Cheers.

naah ..... that was in humoristic part of forum ....
there is still no SM for A J

read all other SMs of any Aleph and talk is the same ; difference is subtle - few tiny jfets in input stage , instead of welding capable mosfets .

there is one file - myriad times posted by me - Aleph 30 pdf , made by Algar_emi ; almost every part is marked and commented

that small file is more informative than any Aleph SM , from many reasons - first one is that Papa didn't wrote SM for usual Greedy Boy , but for skilled tech .

Algar_emi made this file for usual Greedy Boy
