guys i got a question:
i did an impulse with rerphase that is only taking care of phase linearization (so rectangular window, center offset etc..)

in a daw (actually logic pro) i've arranged 2 tracks, one is a straight song with no processing...
the other is the same song convolved with the impulse (i've used sir2 convolver)

why are the peakmeters showing different values?
seems that the track convolved with the impulse has much higher peaks....many times overloading the output by 5 db!
i did not mess with eq or gain in the impulse creation step...

please explain me... is this normal?

thx a lot!

maybe you could check your corretion with holmimpulse
my setup:

holmimpulse > VAC cable 1 (VAC= virtual audio cable)
VAC cable 1 > VSThost with convolver > VAC cable 2
VAC cable 2 > input of holmimpulse,

then you can see what is happening in your filter, amplitude, phase
hope this helps

Paul

Simply speaking, you are moving the peaks and valleys around from what once was a neatly stacked box with nothing sticking out into just piling them on top of each other when required.

Imagine a sine wave that just as it hits the top of the hill gives a large spike all the way to the bottom.
If you shift the phase of the sine signal you now have the same spike beginning at the bottom but still pointing downwards.
This is a -10dB 100Hz sine with spikes and the same with a 100Hz allpass filter.
And it sounds just as horrible as it looks so it's only for illustrative purposes.

thx for the explanation, it makes sense indeed

so in a digital system, when the music is peaking at something like -0.01dBFS if i apply a FIR i'm gonna have a digital clip for sure...

how do you guys handle this? drop everything by 6dB and then fir filter it?

This is precisely what Thuneau advices to do in the Loudspeaker Phase Arbitrator, which faces the same situation:
DSP Loudspeaker Phase Arbitrator. Transient Perfect loudspeaker processor
(page 11 of the user guide)

And this is the main reason why rePhase integrates a volume control in the general tab. You can of course also choose to reduce the volume in front of the convolution engine.

what if someone wants to do an ABX test of the phase linear system again the minimal phase version?

if i drop by 6 dBFS both the filtered and the original signal it would not be fair since the filtered would peak higher... should i put a limiter after the convolution, to tame the peaks?

Wow, glad I looked at the forum while this thread was on the first page (I rarely venture past there...).

This is interesting. Please post your PayPal address in case some of us wish to make a donation after trying the software

Thank you. Maybe that will happen when version 1.0.0 is out, but I am not sure yet.
Sourceforge used to provide good interfaces to paypal donations (with comments and all), but this is not available anymore for "new" projects (for technical reasons...)
