I'm about to build the Heruka with Fostex 168Esigma drivers. I then read at a German retailer that Audio nirvanas 6.5" could be used as a substitute to the more expensive Fostexspeaker, but does anyone here know how these two brands and models compare to each other?
best regards Ken |

the AN speakers are mid-q (read as suited to bass reflex , TL etc ) speakers vs. the low q (suitable for horn loading) fostex 168EZ, 166E etc ... from vague reading (search audioroundtable.com), they were decent sounding at best, nothing truly exceptional YMMV

I had read the same as Zobsky. They are decent, but don't compare to the 206E, 166E. The Sigma's are a step above those drivers, so if you have the choice, I'd go with the 168E Sigma.

FE168 sigma (first model without E) is an excelent driver
wery fast with god bass responce for the full range driver not so expencive but maybe it is harder to find "old" model... actualy the driver is cheep for the perfomance... As I am remember I simulate the driver in a folded voigt cabinet results was more then excelent if we can say so... The cabinet was very elegant (not big) and bass respose was great. In the top end You can expect not less then curves shows. Double cone effect can be avoided by dumping around with wool or something light. I listened to cheeper model of FE167 in the mass loaded cabinet with 5W single ended was great for the about 60 usd cost per driver, of course FE168sigma is much better driver... I suggest to go to FE168sigma if You can

Hmm, it seems like I have to make up my mind if i'm going to build a pair of budgetspeakers or spend some more cash....
The cabinet will cost about 1/3 of the pair of sigmadrivers, Audionirvana 1/2 of the sigmas. However, as long as the AN-drivers are OK they should be worth testing. I read some of the opinions but found most comments to be about their estetics or the material of the magnet and as long as the result is good I really don't care if the magnet is metallic or polymer.... One could test the AN-drivers and use untill one gets fed up with them and then invest in a new pair, that way you'll have the next project basicly for free. Damn, all these choices

Kmj,
I ordered 2 * Audio Nirvana 6.5" yesterday to install in a OmegaTL following the AudioXpress article "Omega QuarterWave Reflex" from: Rick Schultz Ill put up the calculus and drawings soon... It's the simplest design to test them... Followed by a design by P. Valarcher with 2 stacked enclosures with vents for 145 lit Plus other ideas like BL-Horn and the must !! a Replikon In the mean time I will finish my Integrated Stereo SE 6C33C-B Good luck with your projects... Alain. |
