Fountek (Rhyme Acoustic) active speaker A-100

Posted 24th July 2015 at 08:18 AM by panson_hk
Updated 28th July 2015 at 01:37 AM by panson_hk

I purchased a pair active speaker. This is manufactured by Fountek under the brand Rhyme Acoustic. The model number is A-100. It uses a 4" full-range driver with vented box. The electronic is contained in the right channel enclosure. The amplifier is LM4766 chipamp. The overall build quality is good. I just paid RMB 399.00 during its sales period. What a good deal!

Chinese product link is https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm..._u=od0rlto94d1 The frequency response shown in this product page does not match with that given the user's instruction of my pair. The curve shown in user's instruction does pretty much match with my initial listening impression: lack of treble.

I measured the speaker with my CLIO Pocket. Measurement shows left and right enclosure response are matched very well.

The last figure shows the left box (passive) driven by another amplifier. We can then see what filtering or EQ is...

Building a cube enclosure

Posted 14th July 2015 at 01:44 AM by panson_hk

I am enjoying all the fun of building speaker enclosure. An inexpensive 2" full-range is employed. The cube is made by MDF. I have measured TS parameters of the driver and its response with a big baffle. I use Basta! and LEAP-5 to simulate the box's response and impedance. Once the box is built, I can compare actual and simulated data.

Two cubes will be built. One is sealed and the other is with passive radiator.

Measuring compliance of passive radiator

Posted 14th July 2015 at 01:32 AM by panson_hk

I am using a handheld force meter and caliper to measure compliance of passive radiators. The force meter is clamped to the caliper. Caliper is used to show the panel displacement whereas force meter displays the corresponding force. I can then obtain compliance C mm/N. I am planning to use an Arduino controlled Z-axis for automatic measurement. The force meter has a USB interface for data acquisition.

I should be able to measure BL vs displacement of a driver by adding a programmable DC supply.

New system hard disk

Posted 8th June 2015 at 02:47 AM by panson_hk

Thanks to the SMART feature of the hard disk and the utility which warned me the disk was dying. I was able to backup a WIN7 system image before things happening. Restoring the image on a new hard disk was done smoothly.

LME49810 300 W amp kit from TaoBao (Mods)

Posted 23rd September 2011 at 07:19 AM by panson_hk

The THD performance of this board can be improved by separate the input/NFB ground from the decoupling grounds. This is a common mistake in many kits.

Simply cut the trace as shown in the figure and connect the input/NFB ground to supply ground via a separate wire. THD improves as shown in the figure.

LME49810 300 W amp kit from TaoBao (Test)

Posted 5th September 2011 at 10:17 PM by panson_hk

The board is ready for test. The bias level is adjusted via monitoring the THD level as well as the distortion residual.

THD vs power for 20 Hz, 1 k and 20 k for 8 Ohm are shown in the figure. It is so high compared to all my 498xx amps. For 1 k, we should have THD lower than 0.0008 %.

Let test the THD vs power without load. Without load connected, output stage contributes very little distortion. This can be used to check whether the 49810 functions as spec or not.

LME49810 300 W amp kit from TaoBao (Cont.)

Posted 5th September 2011 at 12:10 PM by panson_hk

The amp is assembled and ready for testing. It is designed to have two rails: one for LME49810 (suggested +/- 60 V) and one for driver/output (suggested for +/- 45V). The speaker protector uPC1237 also has an input for detecting the presence of AC (half-wave rectified).

In my initial test, one rails supply to 49810 and the output stage. The positive is also connected to the AC input of upC1237.

LME49810 300 W amp kit from TaoBao

Posted 5th September 2011 at 08:26 AM by panson_hk
Updated 5th September 2011 at 08:36 AM by panson_hk

This kit is available in many sellers in eBay and TaoBao. My one is purchased from TaoBao. The output stage does not have protection. All the resistors are pre-inserted. What a nice service to save some time.

The 49810 heatsink screw holes are not aligned well. I also worry about its size.

The Miller compensation cap is a pre-soldered chip cap on the bottom side as shown in the picture. Fuses are pre-installed in the fuse holders.

Output are five pairs of 5200/1943.

LM3886 x 3 First Test

Posted 16th August 2011 at 05:29 AM by panson_hk

I briefly measured the LM3886 x 3 parallel board this morning. THD vs freq for one, two in parallel and three in parallel are measured.

Load of 4 Ohm was also tested. When using one 3886, the on-chip protection activates periodically when doing low frequency (~ < 500 Hz) test. No such protection operation happens for the same output level for higher frequencies (>1kHz). The problem goes away when using 3886s in parallel.

More systematic tests will follow.
