Hi all

Before actual soldering, I have once again looked into the schematic of Zeny whether the cascode would work as I have wanted.

Mmm . . . and, I have finally decided to cut two caps off for the prototype . . .

As I have not made another revision drawing, I am not posting it.
I will start soldering from tonight . . . :)

Hi Choky

I m now having listening test of Zeny.
I changed the schematics somewhat . . .
Particularly, PSU . . .
TL431 gives me too high noise . . . I can t control . . .
So, all changed with zener reference . . . quiet . . .

Will post the schematics as built, after finishing the listeng test.

Mmmmmm . . . nice music . . . :) :) :)

Regards

Hi lineup

I use Sennheiser HD600.
I brought my Zeny to a high-end shop to choose a can.
Actually, the shop enjoyed listening very much . . . :D
And wanted to see the ugly inside . . . :)

As I remember Sennheiser HD600 is 300 Ohm impedance.
My brother has got a pair of them.
They are very good hifi headphones.
Maybe best performance/price of any headphones!
...............................

These headphones needs a little more voltage gain ( and less current )
than 32 Ohm phones.

While 32 Ohms can do with only a buffer amp ( voltage follower) or maybe need max gain=4,
300/600 ohm phones may need like x8 - x10 voltage gain.

The suitable voltage gain is dependant on sensitivity of phones in question.
Decibel loudness per milliwatt.
And of course how also the voltage levels, Vrms, provided from sound sources you want to use. CD-player/preampifier.

..............................

I am sure you have a fantastic and enjoyable sound from your setup.
I find it hard to think of any better phones sound system ....
Not for more normal amount of money spent.

Two questions about Zeny

Hallo JH6YOU,

May I ask you two questions about Zeny? I just discovered your thread and I am interested in building a (new) dedicated amp for my Grado headphones.

1. Am I correct in supposing that the voltage gain of this amplifier is just 1, in other words: That it provides current gain only, no voltage gain? With a series resistor of 220 Ohms at the output, this would mean that I need a preamp with a large output voltage to drive the Grados to reasonably high sound levels.

2. Is the guesstimated current consumption of 90 mA per channel correct?

I have been a fan of the Zen creations of Nelson Pass since a long time as you can learn from my website, http://home.hetnet.nl/~a.van.waarde.

Therefore I would like to build a "mini-Zen" for headphones.

Best regards from grey and cold Holland:smash:

1.

Yes, the gain is about 1 .. Enuff .. Zeny and your grado (32ohm) at max volume might tears off your ear drum .. So, you might want to increase the series output resistor value somewhat bigger than 220R ..

2.

Your guesstimation works well .. :D
