Is this a tacit nod to using your ears when you don't have access to specialized tools? :)

Using the ears is not the problem, the problem is using the ears without the eyes.

If you remove the individual's ability to see and know what's playing, and with it the ability to discern a difference disappears, then what's left to talk about?

It's a bit like discussing how to best ensure that your home is populated by the best-smelling ghosts.

No. You cant engineer a solution without some measurement to show what (if) the problem is and what is the cause, any other way is just speculation and guessing...
Get a scope at least...
I am on about EMC testing which even a lot of firms don't have the required gear and use test houses.
