Grey or Reds?

I went to the cottage this afternoon, so that I could verify what drivers I have... and under the excuse of starting to gather my stock out before they sell this nice house. ;)

Well well.. Sorry to have to tell you that one less pair of Reds are on the market right now, since they are here with me..

The console really looks great too.. I felt it was a shame to remove these, so that I can examine them more closely..

Time to start Red's lessons. What is the most "musical" way to use them? and for my curiosity, how much these drivers are worth? (no, I don't intend to sell them..)

Happy me :D

Whoppeee!!!

Likely an open baffle (OB)

and for my curiosity, how much these drivers are worth? (no, I don't intend to sell them..)

The one good pair i had sold for close to $200 USD and i'd expect them to be worth more now,

Nordmende amp

PS. What amp is in the Nordmende? ... i'm gonna guess the EL84 SE with the big OPTs (OutPut Transformers).

I remember that it is an SE - EL84 amp, not very powerful, as I remember..

The console looks great, the model is "Casino" the amp section is stereo, but the tuner is mono, and the preamp section is, to say the least, not very transparent, nor subtle. But it's a very romantic combo.

I guess that the open baffle means nice midrange, no bass and no highs? humm..

As discussed previously, a TQWT and some decent tweeter, could this be a decent compromise with an SE amp? I have a 300B amp and plan to build a parafeed 45. Could just put them back in the console as well..

Casino i've had thru here... i've got 2 pr of the big trafos, they should make a REALLY nice EL84 amp. An RH84-style SE amp is good for 4-5W and really nice.

Bass is dependent on how big the baffle is (to a certain point (no matter how big you won't go much below the driver's Fs. For fine tuning it is very helpful to have the Fs & the Q, but for starters just put them into anything you have big and flat. I got very respectable bass out of Visaton B200 & 1.2 x 1.2 m baffle. I expect the Isophon to have higher Q and higher Fs but that is just a guess. With the bigger magnet the Q should be lower then the grey ones, which should be lower than the much more common P18s (see above). If Q is low enuff a pipe of some sort or aperiodic box can work.

Be warned, open baffles can be a real siren....

Reds

I've just received a private email from Stephen Brightwood in wich he describes how he used (and fried :hot: ) a pair of Reds.

He seems very enthusiastic about the results he got when using these drivers in big TQWT.

Has anyone else had some other good experiences/projects to share about them?

I gave a try, as is, no cabinet, low volume (I know..) just to have an idea of the basic balance. As is, they sound like big midranges, no real highs. Time to experiment.

Flea market findings

Got a new pair of Philips 4.5"drivers with accordeon textile surrounds. Great!

And pair of Realistic "Solo 4" boxes, with small oval 4.5" X 6.5" + whizzer, drivers. They sound good actually, well balanced, but may be a little less lively than Philips.

Found a pair of Dual boxes with oval full rangers in them, but then, the seller changed his idea and kept them.. :(

Can't win every time.

Back to Reds

Well, I reread that private email and I still read it as a pair of fried Reds, but that's probably because french is my native language. Let's not start an argument here.. :xeye:

So, the suggestions I got were about using the Reds in a TQWT that's vented upward, and using a tweeter above 10khz. Do the Reds go so high? and what type of tweeter would be suitable?

The plastic horn Foster tweeter i've only mentioned would be good....

speaking of those, on the road trip we just got back from, i scored some Norescos i've not had thru here before... honkin' big magnet 8" Fosters (same numbers but different surrounds on the "pair" :() along with the Foster horn....

I'll do my best to put a pic I took a few weeks ago, and that do no justice to the drivers. They are clean and in good order. But presently, they are back into their enclosures.

The pic only shows the older driver that needed repairs, compared to the standard "half roll" suspension.

Just not enough time these days. I'm leaving for a holiday soon.

Keep in touch

Hi Tom,

What I found funny is that nobody seems to know my "accordeon" version of the 5060 drivers. As the pic shows, they seem different than the more usual half roll ones.

As well, the "accordeon" ones were fitted in "vented" cabinets that looked the same as the other ones, fitted with the half roll suspensions, in sealed cabinets.

I don't know much about Philips full range drivers, but they seem quite interesting.
