Actually, I think Keith's referring to the John Linsley Hood Book, not Horowitz and Hill.
However, H&H (the art of electronics - note the missing 'linear') is probably easier to get hold of, and probably more useful for general information. I'd recommend it for a starting point over JLH (which is a very good read, but skips a lot of useful nitty gritty).

You could start reading today by downloading the free ebook Lessons in Electric Circuits by Tony R. Kuphaldt.
Sorry, my mistake.it is the JLH BOOK that I am after.
A useful book, but not in the same league as H&H.
If you are starting from the very beginning then the book I would recommend is Foundations of Wireless and Electronics, by Scroggie and/or Amos (the author changed over the various versions). Then H&H, after that perhaps Doug Self.
