The 15 Song Album collection:

I actually liked it in that style and my comment was intended to affirm this. I'd like to listen to some of the studio stuff, as I suspect they'd be a lot tighter in that context. I particularly liked the flute part in that performance.
DSOTM is probably my favourite album of all time, certainly my favourite rock album.

Dub and Reggae are an area I'd like to get into a bit more.

Try these as a starter Gas..... Easy Star All Stars - Dubber Side Of The Moon , Island Records Presents - DUB 1976 to 1990 , Lee Scratch Perry + Dub Syndicate - Time Boom De Devil Dead , just a few of my faves ... if you wanna get really twisted anything by Dread Zeppelin :) .

11 - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - Devo (Rooling Stones)

I love how Devo got permission to record their cover. It was an obvious display of contempt for the overly bloated rock establishments that were prominent at the time, done by using one of their own sacrosanct songs to do it.

Not familiar with the story, would you care to elaborate?

01 - I Fought The Law (And I Won) - The Dead Kennedys (original Sonny Curtis - he lost)
02 - Time - Easy Star All - Stars ( Pink Floyd ) https://youtu.be/KJpHDpq8OpE

04 - Pachelbel's Canon - Hiromi (An improvised and jazzed up version and one of my favorites)
05 - Bouree - Jethro Tull (based on J.S. Bach's Bourree in E Minor)
06 - Mad World - Gary Jules & Michael Andrews ( Original by Tears for Fears )
07 - Denis - Blondie ( Original Denise by Randy And The Rainbows 1963 )
08 - Help - Deep Purple (a rather slowed-down rendition of the Beatles' original)
09 - Smells Like White Spirit - John Shuttleworth (DIY version of Nirvana song)

11 - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - Devo (Rooling Stones)

13 - You Really Got Me - Van Halen - ( original The Kinks 1964) A whole new era of rock guitar playing like never heard before from Van Halen's 1978 first album.

I was going to change my choice as The Kinks one is really well known, but was past edit time. Off the same first Van Halen album check out the original "Ice Cream man" by John Brim - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FXzfXBHXW8

Here's a guitar cover of the VH version for the same song, not bad! Face melting guitar solo over a blues tempo for the time period lol. I remember as a kid hearing that album when it came out in 78 and was like, wow, totally blown away.. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcuBVuRXQTU

A moving reinterpretation of the rock classic. LIVE from the Moose Hall!
Could someone else choose please as I'm working now?

You don't need permission to do a cover but you will have to pay the writers their royalty.
Devo got the performance half of the money made, the Stones got the writers half. Of course Devo had to pay all the costs of recording, publishing etc out of their half.

You will absolutely need permission to sample anyone because you are taking both the song and the performance and depending on the quality of the original acts lawyers you may well end up with no royalty money at all while still keeping the cost.
