Re: Amp in the trunk of the Caddy
You must not have a Caddy. I had a 1991 that would fit 3 people in the trunk.
And as you can see I am not that skinny.

Re: quick question
I would go with XA30.5 if I have to consider the room space.
According to PassLabs spec, it has the output volt +/-30V and the
output current +/-20A. Wow, this means the amp could fully cover
even lower-than-1.5-ohm load. The amp must have number of output
MOSFETs in parallel.
Actually, Japanese 'Stereo Sound' confirms the number of output
devices, saying ". . . The stability of this amp is secured by applying the
surpising number of power devices . . ."

Re: Re: Amp in the trunk of the Caddy
This must be the missing piece of info that the feds have been waiting for.

I'm lost again, why so many ?
(if i were Mr Colburn i'd already be having nightmares of waking up as mr Re-Cyclotrunkguy)

The throttle wide open, I'd like to shoot down my guesswork.
1. Lower bias per device provides the Q-point of sweet spot.
2. Lower bias per device provides lower junction temp.
3. Lower bias per device extends the life of devices.
4. The sum of devices improves the total output current up to +/-20A.
Hmm . . .
I have to power off and pack the computer. Tomorrow morning,
I am leaving on a jet plane for a new area where I have to stay
several years. The music will be the only and the best friend after
work then . . .
Cheers,

Hey, we'll be there for you, too!

Papa
5) Sound. An XA30.5 with fewer devices sounds thinner and
has less control than the larger XA amplifiers. Since we want a
"family similarity" sonically, we use more devices than absolutely
necessary.

Cheers,
I had thought I'm in a bad spot just seeing my family (and my audio toys) monthly...I guess I'm better off in that regard. Unless you'll also haul the family with you(?)...I know from above you're bringing BaboZen and F4...you must have tricked the wife saying you got rid of JLow but actually you shipped it to your new address. I bet you are bringing with you the RED BOX...

You are better off as I would see my family bi-monthly . . . ahrr . . .
The RED BOX is still in Busan . . . I'm too busy to play with it for
the time being . . .
Only F4 is following me. Wife and children are enjoying the sound of
"Prison Break" and "Lost" from the baby speakers thru Babo Zen.
I'm not allowed to disturb any of their fun.
Anyhow, I always keep few secret plans behind wife's sight . . .
Yeah, leaning towards XA30.5.
My personal Aleph/Supratek/Magnepan combo seems to beat the 'showcase' setups at many/most of the local audio stores at any price! I think there might be some synergy-magic between the Aleph and a triode pre-amp. I'll replace my Aleph with an XA after it goes bad and I send it to Pass Labs for fixing and then get it back and when it goes bad a second time! That will probably be a looooong time from now! Only other option is I'm hopefully acquiring a pair of Maggie 3.6qr speakers in a few weeks, and I may feel like it is underpowered. But with its short term 4-ohm output of 180 watts, it might also be just fine! Nelson says in the manual that I should wait for the heat death of our star before replacing the amp and that is my intention.

It's been 12 years and we still aren't seeing much in the way
of failures on the Aleph series. It will be interesting to see how
long they last on average.

Once my wife left my Aleph 3 powered on for more than 24hrs...it has given me countless hours of enjoyment since that day.
Mr. Pass, if I e-mail you the Serial# will you be able to find out what year it was born?
