RaspyFi/Volumio - Turn raspberry Pi into Audiophile audio Player

The actual conversion is not difficult, it just takes a specialized chip - SPDIF transmitter. However, for reliable proper operation you need a way to provide control information - e.g. setting SPDIF preamble. At least audio/non-audio bit for AC3 streams - look at 'IEC958 Playback Default' control for any card with spdif output (most integrated ones on MB) listed in "amixer contents". Value of that control is operated by video players for AC3 streams

Thank you, i will look into this.
Always nice to learn something new.

1. Why serving interrupts with low-latency requirement for audio playback?
You are absolutely right. Latency is no requirement for playback.
As long as all Requests are handled it should be sufficient.

2. The IRQs will be processed by the CPU, whether they are thrown by the USB controller (USB cards) or the ASoC audio controller (built-in soundcard/analog-HDMI output).

I see.
For mp3 playback i see a load of 0.05 and for flac 0.4.
So the CPU seems to handle a bit perfect playback through the hdmi alsa device quite nicely.
Looks like i am all set then.

MPD uses either the volume control elements provided by your soundcard (for available controls see alsamixer -c CARDNAME), or its internal volume control feature. All is configured by mpd params mixer_type, mixer_device, mixer_control, mixer_index - see man mpd.conf.

Provided your chain is configured to do no resampling, it is bit-perfect. If so, a sonic difference has never been published to exist in a credible blind listening test.

I would keep buffer_time in mpd as large as possible to minimize risks of xruns. The default of 500ms is a reasonable value.

Many thanks for the advice. I have looked before at the various parameter options in mpd.conf, it is nice to get some tips on what to do with them as there seem to be few examples available when I perform a Google search.

While I'm familiar with WAV/PCM file structures, I'm not familiar with digital volume attenuation - I assume it simply involves some Fourier math performed on the original PCM stream/file? (Sorry for the simple question.)

Thanks for the info.

Hmm, ARM is lacking any standards, no on-board initialisation (bios-like ), everything must be handled by the OS :-( Inexpensive, though...

Thats one of the reasons I really like ARM :)
My kernel are tweaked just as I like it and I have removed everything I dont need just to be sure there are as little as possible bad code that creates stupid extra CPU cycles..

Realtime clock just keeps current time and date, often having a battery to keep running when the device is powered down. It is by no means related to audio.

Resampling is required when your source audio has a different sampling rate than your software mixer or soundcard hardware support.

Just put mine together with my odac today. I think this has great potential for a stand alone 2 channel system. I put a post on their forum about some issues I ran into but all in all I think it's pretty good. Now if someone could point me to a USB 5.1 DAC on par with the odac I would really be happy, sadly nothing like that exists yet.

It now plays 24/192 quite nicely. I have a few which seems to loose sync giving pops and crackle. I need to play more with this combo to be able to comment on SQ.

But first impression - quite good.

Brgds

SQ i not as detailed as of the SB Touch - nor is it pure as the SQ of the SB. I will probably play a bit more with the combo just for fun and then head for the community squeeze.

It's plenty configurable on the OS and s/w side. Similarly, on the h/w side. I found converting the RPi USB feed to SPDIF before the DAC made a difference for me.

I've just dug out my old SACD player, so will be ABX'ing over the next few days to see how much I have been suffering from positive bias over the last few weeks.

T-DAC for diyAudio trials

Hi all,

I am sorry for the delay. I will send one RPi-DAC (T-DAC) to Michelangelo (diyAudio forum) for evaluation. It is still the intention, as promised.
I am still waiting for my final rev.3 PCB and I want to assemble all with a Switched Power Supply (SPS) unit, potentially with an enclosure and transformer, too.
I should be available asap, latest end of Oct. 2013 so that you can give it a try.
I apologize for the delay.

BTW:
I have publish some info about the RPi-DAC-SPS:
T-DAC and RPi-DAC - High Quality DAC

Best regards
tjaekel

Is RPi-DAC running on your site?

Hi Michelangelo and all,
did you have a chance to test the shipped RPi-DAC already?
BTW: Koalo (working on I2S support for Rasbian Linux kernel) has it up and running and told me, he has also now 24bit support for the PCM1794A working (cool !)

BTW:
How could I try your RaspyFi kernel and system?
How to get your OS with I2S support and to install on my Raspberry Pi?

A lot of regards
Torsten

Hi,

Couple of odd issues I’m having w/RaspyFi_1.0 that perhaps someone with more Linux experience could shed some light on.

Regards - tppc.

1) MOUNT COMMAND NOT WORKING

I'm trying to manually mount a Windows share from RaspyFi and cannot seem to get it working. The exact same Windows share is access just fine from MPD in the WebGUI. Here is the command I'm using and the error output.

sudo mount -t cifs -o username=xxxxxx,password=yyyyyy //192.168.1.21/Repository /mnt/REPOSITORY
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on //192.168.1.21/Repository,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
(for several filesystems (e.g. nfs, cifs) you might
need a /sbin/mount. helper program)
In some cases useful info is found in syslog – try
dmesg | tail or so

2) ERRORS TRYING TO INSTALL NEW REALTEK 8192CU WIFI DRIVER

There is a new Realtek 8192CU driver, version v4.0.2_9000.20130911 that includes among other fixes, a fix for the RX stats bug. Note: the version in the the RaspyFi 1.0 image is older v3.4.4_4749.20121105. I tried installing the new driver but got the error output below.

i@rp1:/mnt/NAS/Music/RTL_UPDATE$ sudo bash install.sh

24 bit Flac files

Hi

Has anyone managed to get the raspberry pi / raspyfi to play 24bit audio over a NAS drive (ethernet connection) without "pop" noises?

I'm experiencing "pop" noises as it plays 24bit flac files. Seems to handle MP3's and 16bit WAV files ok.

I also have another Pi set up as a bluetooth audio sink and that works perfectly (MP3).

Shame, i have high hopes for this little device to make a great front end for my hi-fi.

Cheers

Hi, I’m using the RaspiFy for about one month. The last configuration is switched On for 2 weeks now, RaspyFi playing continuously music without a single problem/hangout, it is really a very stable device.

I can play 192/24 HiRes music but using a slightly different setup.

My current snd card is the "Traktor Audio 6" from the NI. I use the standard RaspyFi distribution and I installed on it the "Squeezelite v1.3" armv6 client. The music is streamed from a Squeezebox server (Logitech Media Server Version: 7.7.3 installed on another machine). The squeezelite client which is alsa-connected to the USB sound card, using next params:

nohup squeezelite-armv6 -o default:CARD=T6 -n RaspyFi -s 192.168.1.101 -d output=debug 2>&1 > /tmp/squeezelite&

Is the 192/24 music really coming to the sound card’s DAC ? I do not know, it would say yes, the squeezelite client is reporting the sample rate of the incoming music which is of 44.1kHz for a CD-quality FLACs and the MP3 streaming and of 96k or of 192k (also 352.8k) when streaming the Hi-Res FLACS.

Regarding the CPU load, the squeezelite client is eating 26% of the CPU for the 192/24 playback and 18% for other formats (96/24, 44.1/16 or the128kbps MP3 internet radio streaming).

I tried also the sample rate of 352800/24 but is refused by my Soud Card - squeezelite crashes on this resolution - so no conclusion for the moment.

I tested following USB cards : M-Audio JAMLAB (able of 96/24), creative soudblaster (44/16), hercules Muse XL Pocket LT3 (96/24), "Audio Kontrol 1" from the NI (96/24) and the usb input of DacMagic from CA (44/16).

They all works well with the squeezelite but not / or not so well / with the MPD, I never manager to play hi res FLACs on the MPD, and the standard CD quality often generated pops during the playback.

So I think I can confirm there is no any hardware limitation for the 192/24 FLAC playback on the RasPyFi, I would say the picky part is the MPD software.

KR, V4
