Wow, nice amp GKF.

thank you
i was shocked when this arrived and has a crazy story.
listed on canuck audio mart for sale a counterpoint sa2000 tube preamp modded by alta vista. got a email from a fellow asking if i would take a trade.
this is what showed up . perfectly clean as new cary product.
i retubed it with the above tubes and a diy high end power cord .
mondorf silver gold caps replaced the 4 jensen stock caps.
finished this last night and playing now in this room it's sonic stage is open as a field. i love it.
this will be up for sale after a few months.
i plan on a parallel 300b single ended mono block pair diy build.
thanks

I don't know about that... sure looks like a keeper to me!

thanks guys
don't get me wrong this cary amp is a wonderful eye and ear pleasing unit.
it's extremely open and neutral . it's layout is fantastic in the right scale with size and transformers. looks killer.

my only reason to sell it is to offset the cost a little for the 6 transformers i will need for the 300b i'm in the process with.
see my only history with tubes have been a dynaco st 70 modded with joe curcio products. i sold off all my tube gear abot 10 years ago .
the counterpoint was the last of this system.
in no way was i thinking of getting back into the realm of tube.
what i agreed to in this trade was just to see if 20 watts triode was enough.
to my shock i was not prepaired to the class this cary is . i have known about cary but it has opened my eyes again.

else where i started a post asking how to start a diy project which led me to a the 300b build.
i'm now under way in this build and soon hope to post pictures of the finished mono blocks.
after all the pictures all you top notch builders post are in my book way cooler then a factory built amp anyone can own.

tonite now the kt88's have about 10 hours on them and are getting better all the time.

thank you tim
yes buddy, i will not stop this project. it's not going well though.
chassis is making me wonder. i see now with this rocket 88 how the weight is on the top .
the glass chassis i'm working on is the worst it will be .
i scraped it and now onto a walnut chassis i am working on

it's all good though , time well spent listening with the rocket 88 .
good times

gordie

dynaco 70 se

My daily amp is a Dynaco St 70 converted to a 6B4G/EL34/Kt88/... SE machine with MQ DS 025s. Dynaco Pas 3 Series II (modified) tube preamp does the input job.

Is the blue effect on the KT88 obtained using blue LEDs on the background?

I think that it has to do with electron bombardment inside the vacuum of the tube when the electrons hit something like the metal shell of the guts in the tube and the glass. The electrons slow down from one energy level to another lower energy level (quanta); as a result, this energy is "shown" radiating that blue glow.

Wow, finally my Chemistry degree from university comes in handy...
