NP D1 DAC clone with enhancement

I did the upgrade - Spencer even supplied the parts needed to bring mine up from an older version. It has made a substantial improvement - the tonal balance is not what changes, what you get is improved resolution, more 3d soundstage, and cleaner tighter bass and treble. I've heard these kinds of improvements before and I put it down to ever decreasing jitter.

For the small outlay, and ease of installation, it's a no-brainer.

Fran

Hi Fran,
another question:
What of the 1-4 Output Mode Selection have you used in your DAC?
Just to make an idea for its setting.
Many thanks again for your help.
Regards.

Davide.

how about no deemphasis control

Hi,
many thanks for your gently answer.
But I meant the 1-4 Output Mode Selection of the "WM8804 to CS8412 converter board". Because I have to solder the resistor, I have before to choose the setting, and I have not understood the exact meaning of that setting.
I am thinking to solder the resistors on a kind of jumper in order to can change the settings.
Can you gently suggest what may be the best solution?
Thanks a lot.

10KOhm potentiometer

Hi,
I have purchased a good quality quad 10KOhm potentiometer for my amplifier.
I ask gently if D1V3 (D1V33 upgraded) can drive this pot with the original 10uF C4 C15 C25 C36 ?
Can I keep my (expensive) 10uF C4 C15 C25 C36 caps, or can the frequency responce be compromised?
Many thanks. Regards.

About WM8804 to CS8412 converter board again

Hi, excuse me for my misunderstanding.
Reading the .PFD guide, it seems (for me) that using the WM8804 to CS8412 converter board on D1V3 (D1V33 upgraded) it can works only at 16bit (mode 1 and 4 resistors combination).
If it is so, how can I choose between "Right-Justified Mode" and "I2S" selections?
I have not the Know-How to proceed the choise by myself.
Can you gently help me another time?
Many thanks. Best regards.
Davide.

Hi Spencer,
I have already read it before!
But it is a description for all the possible combunation and usage. With a D1V3 DAC, can I use all the 4 output mode selection?
For D1V3 picture shows only 16 bit Right-Justified Mode. Is it the only selection mode that I can use?
If I had known this, I would not have posted the question, don't you think?
Many thanks. Regards.
Davide.

For SM5842, it can only do Right Justify mode (RJ) at 16 bit mode.
For PMD100, change all to Left Justify mode (LJ) for 16 to 24 bit mode.
On PMD100 converter board, cut trace pin 13 at bottom away from +Vcc and tie it to Ground at pin 14.

Hi,
Ok!
And about J28/J29 how have I set them?
With DIR9001 and SM5842 they had not effect to output mode. But now with WM8804 (RJ mode) and SM5842, have I to set J28/29 for 16 bit mode or not?
Thanks again.

Hi,
again:
on my D1V3 board, J21 and J22 can switch between Dir9001 mode and 8412 mode (it is written just so); now with WM8804 how have I to set J21&J22??
Thanks again.
Davide.

Both J28 and J29 has no effect on WM8804 and DIR9001 converter board. They are only used for CS8412 and CS8414 chips.

For D1V3, J22 set to 16bit for RJ mode for SM5842 digital filter. J21 set to DEM LED off.

Hi,
REALLY A FANTASTIC IMPROVEMENT!!!!
OK, D1V3 (and D1V33 upgrade) has always been a great DAC, but now with WM8804 is better again in all the audible sensations!!
This upgrade is really a MUST!!
Thanks a lot Spencer!
Sincerely.
Davide.

J5, J6 and J7 switches

Hi,
in my D1V3 (with D1V33 and WM8804 upgrade) I have wired J5, J6 and J7 (Polarity Select Phase, Jitter Select, Dither Select) to relative 2 way switches in the front panel of the box.

The question is:

Can I change the postions of the switches with the DAC powered-on during the listening? Or should be better do it with the DAC powered-off?

Many thanks in advance. Best regards.
Davide.

Hi @all,

after a very long time the D1 is in his temporary housing.
The inside picture is not the actually, the output caps are now black gates.

Thanks Spencer for this DAC. The tests with "WM8804" and "NPC SM5842AP" comes later after enjoying this for now. ;)
