Marantz CD63 & CD67 mods list

I need a bit of advice, even if it is totally off-topic. But somebody here will know the answer. For a long time I have had a channel imballance. One channel is about 2db (I'm guessing here) louder. The Marantz checks out, as does the amp. That leaves the speakers. I changed caps in the x'over a year ago and did a lousy job but the problem predates that i think. It's a simple x'over; just a cap two resisitors and the air-core thingy. Which component could be at fault (oh yes and there's a by'pass cap too on the mai one). Sending them to Holland it not an option and i have no way to measure and noone who can do it. Thoughts?

No rooms are balanced, no way you "feel" channel are.
In my case I have a channel with super large scene and the other louder but narrower. They are not in the center of the wall.
Ears also can play, even if you are used to deal life with unbalanced ears, when you focus on music you notice it. When listening to you music with good headphones, do you feel that also?

Did you interchange the speakers ( left to right etc.) and see if the problem moved from one side to the other ? If it does than it must be the speaker and possibly the crossover you 'modified'. Better you try this before attacking the crossover again.

If the problem stays on the same channel it could be the
1. Source
2. The amp
3. The cables
4. The room acoustics

You say 1 and 2 are OK.

I did switch speakers and there is a very slight improvement but I overlooked the obvious; they are placed against a wall with a sloping ceiling, so the right speaker is under the lowest part and the left, the highest, so it's no wonder...duh. Still I think there's a problem with the x'over. On a more interesting subject, after about 350 hours, the Marantz continues to change character; i think it's about run-in though and i don't expect much more. Very big improvement all across the board. Very transparent, detailed and now even-handed throughout the spectrum. I had some friends over and played a variety of music. They were most impressed, by the sheer musicality and totally undigital sound. Me pleased. When Brent says our old girls are the equal of new ones costing far far more, he's right. Mind you, I haven't any way to compare, but those of you who have might chime in?

Friends, someone will install the PFM Flea in a Marantz DV6600?, which requires modifications needs?

Hi Shep,

That sloped ceiling acts as a reflection screen and it focuses the sound. I have the same problem here with a cabinet with a few drawers on the side wall that reflects the sound from the tweeter on the left. I have an other cabinet on the right now, and this greatly reduces the unbalance. I didn't think that sticking damping material on the drawers would look very nice, so...

I'll chime in on the players! I still like my 8400 with DOS very much. I don't think there's ever going to be a set of opamps that will outperform it. Though they do not sound bad, on the contrary, but the DOS just delivers more MUSIC.

Hi Osvaldo,

Looks like the clocking distribution is going to need a bit more than just one Flea to completely eliminate all the nasty logic, but that's mostly the case with DVD players. The audio clock is often shared with or derived from the video clock, and in most players a PLL or clock generator is used to generate the various frequencies that are needed.

First you have to find out which clocks are used for the audio DAC's, looking at the first pic I'd say there's one PCM-SCLK (probably 33.8688MHz) and one that is switched between 33 and 20? MHz, the picture is a bit unclear.

It would be nice if the clock generator could be eliminated, but this requires a bit more work. So I'd say start with just one 27MHz Flea that replaces X101 and see what it does. At least you'll have a low-jitter source, and that must bring some improvement. Maybe even better picture quality!

Thanks Ray for the tips, I'm providing better images of the parts related to the clock, I hope you serve

So I'm recommending 350hrs+ run-in time for the Dos board and Brent's SI caps. Take heart, it's worth it. The difference is astounding. Again, the first 100 hours or so was pretty ghastly. Lest anyone belongs to the non-believer camp (in which case they are on the wrong planet) I had an audiophile/musician neighbor come by at 100 hour intervals. He too was impressed by the obvious changes taking place. I suspect any changes now will be quite subtle. I have two sets of very good interconnects and their signatures were remarkably different and self-evident. That's not entirely a good thing since they each do some things better or worse and neither is perfect. I was able to change speaker placement quite dramatically due to how revealing the Marantz is now. To think that there are still mods that could be done...makes the mind boggle and the wallet quiver with anxiety. STEADY ON!

Just chatter! but this thread must never die! (otherwise, one by one, our old Marantz's will too!) I hope someone is collecting lasers and sleds for the future. The rest of the stuff can always be replaced. I've already replaced one laser and sled assembly...I'm still waiting for someone to make a really nice enclosure, say a mix of wood and plexiglass It would be me but I can't find any plexi of good thickness under 50 euros a small sheet and I wouldn't have the courage nor the wits to move everything out of it's scrap metal box and into a nice wooden case.

Dear Ray
From what I could follow the circuit, the main clock is the 27Mhz on the Micro Controller and exits through the sm8707 to 33M/36M

Best regards

Thanks for the pictures. I think to start with, a 27MHz Flea can be used instead of X101. Remove the crystal and all the surrounding components and connect The Flea to OSC-IN pin 162. You have to configure The Flea for 3.3V output voltage. Details can be found on the 2nd Flea page on my website.

Ray
