Prototypes can be messy. One little funky ground can render a circuit unusable.

There are ways to stabilize a less than ideal layout. Example - it is not always practical to have a short lead between the output stage and the rest of the circuit. This is where anti-parasitic series resistors come in. I split the resistor, with half the resistance at one end of the lead and the other resistor at the other end of the lead. That way the long and unavoidable lead is not connected directly to any active device. ;)
