I forgot to mention the obvious - three woofers in series will have a relatively high impedance, and no "gain" as would paralleling the same woofers...

raising the xover freq of the tweeter very much will result in some problems with the highs coming off those relatively large woofers. Imo 4kHz is much too high.

A better idea is to measure the electrical freq response of the xover with an equivalent R in the hole replacing the tweeter - see how much energy below the nominal xover point is actually reaching the tweeter. That could cause IM. So you might get rid of the distortion by increasing the attenuation below the xover point - via a change to the tweeter xover...

Also measure the acoustic response of just the tweeter...

another basic test is to play a sine wave sweep from below the xover up (woofers need to be disabled and replaced by resistors) and listen to the sound of the tweeter. If it "twizzles" - the sine does not sound pure - then there may be a problem with the tweeter itself.
