Is it true that most people who cares about sound is at a later stage of age, whilst the younger generation likes gadgety players like iPod?

I was surprised sometimes ago when attending a local HiFi club where about 80 percent of the participants could easily be at my dad's age.

Is it true that this hobby is a diminishing one?

To add to the injury, there were no ladies to be seen, let alone young ones :D

Tell us how long you've been in the hobby!

So... I'm M/37
starting the hobby at 14 but got into it again last year.

Built first amp (TDA2020 in 76') when i was 14. It promptly melted down. A year later and lots of etching solution stains on the lounge carpet futher i had a working TBA810 amp and 709 phono pre. And a discrete amp. Then i got enough money to buy a very decent system and gave up on diy until i turned 22. Today i am way older than i should be.

Me too. I should be younger, but I keep getting older. :D

I'm 43 (well, next month I'll be). I was a hifi fan since about 12 years old (yeah, I had some nice brochures back then). Did not really get any good gear until my mid 20's. Audio meets are not a good place to pick up chicks. Any ladies I have met there are (1)not audiophiles and (2) in a committed relationship  .

21 here, been interested since about 9-10 I guess! Playing with speakers in various cardboard boxes and building a sub with no knowledge of box design  :D . Ah well, we all start somewhere :)

I don't think you'll find many women interested, electronics was about the least popular subject with them I've found, and big speakers may just top that! Was suprised to see UK driver company Bandor was started by a woman though.

26 here. Started really getting into DIY audio at age 22 after graduating when I finally had an income.

I was fortunate to grow up around high fidelity audio in my home, but we never really delved into much DIY as my father didn't really have sufficient free time. Instead we would stop by Progressive Audio when downtown in Columbus and spend an hour here and there auditioning some amazing systems. Even went with my father to go meet Jim Thiel and hear a presentation when I was in early high school. I was the only 16 year old in my area with a set of NAD components and Thiel CS2 loudspeakers for a bedroom system . :D

I am M/44. Started the audio early, very early. Taking my grandparents tube console apart. Wanted to know where those musicians are. Seriously started around 10 when my father gave me soldering iron for birthday. Rest is history. Made tons of solid state stuff. When you live in socialistic country, not much stuff is available, just junk. I was always after sound quality. Built tuners, amplifiers, preamps, even complete electronic for reel-to-reel. Speakers offcourse. All sorts of ones.
Now here in US, moved to tubes, classA, high efficiency, combined with with high quality source. Still tons of fun projects to built, but mostly for curiosity, I am happy with the sound I have achieved at home.

definitely

I got interested when I was about 8 years old !
I liked to open up equipment and see what was inside. Then came the first record player and I was facinated . Didn't open it for a very long time because it was forbidden ! I made my first valve preamp when I was 16 .
Based on current research and our religious theory , I must be close to 1 million years old ! :D Lots of body hopping along the way of course !
