No - so-called unregulated amplifiers will mainly depend on teh transform core size and wire sizes, pretty much as a home amp without PSU regulators, but the other adavantages of fewer turns, slightly higher efficiency etc., of using an autoformer still apply.
Once you use an autoformer, teh primary centertap (all high car amps with switching supplies use push pull converters), MUST be connected to 12 volt ground, which of course then becomes audio ground also.
