well, im not talking lightweight bookshelf.

it sures beat Platinum Audio Solo, which is quite respectable in bookshelfs category.

what i actually mean is, if u want dynamics, should go for the drivers that can deliver them with ur current amps or possible future amps.

i've tried jx92s, alpair10, alpair10bass + alpair 5. they cannot deliver what beyma OB can deliver.

im interested on ff85, since its true mid tweeter, prob alpair7 can achieve similar performance, but again i doubt about the dynamics.

cheers

For that kind of music (Rock)_ most of audiophool speakers sounds like C.r.ap (not that they don't sound that way with any other music;0) why don't you buy PA boxes and cover them or put behind the curtain if they don't look to your taste? Or just buy Wilson Audio used as they are said to be the most dynamic sounding conventional speakers on the market. I don't know what's up with you people ,can't you just say no to those gey looking speakers ?Is this an affect of too many sex related commercials in all medias? $10,000 for rock speakers when this supposed to be a music for rebellious, penniles bastards with no future?? I think I'm getting to old ..;0)

Music for me is about mood! Being there! Taken away! Dreaming!
All the ambiance and choir and orchestral bits in some of these very
well composed pieces of rockmusic from for example:
Fen - A Witness to The Passing of Aeons
Dimmu Borgir - Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse
Nightwish - Nemo
Behemoth - Lucifer

But I listen to all kinds of music,
so it needs to be an allround speaker.

Here's one that goes from 34Hz to nearly 19kHz with a commendably flat FR.
Woofer crosses over at 450 Hz and seems to sound very nice and competes, IMHO (and others as well), with some very Hi-End speakers.

I recently came across a Morel floorstanding speaker:
Morel Loudspeakers - Home Audio - Octave Signature Audiophile Speakers - Octave Signature Floorstanding

So I wonder, since Morel drivers are available can this not be cloned?

A slightly bigger box say a few inches taller, 11" wide (9" internal), 18" deep (16" intneral) would still work within WAF.

Cost No Object veriosn:
subwoofer:

woofer:
http://www.morel.co.il/products/pdf/Woofers/SCW/Specs sheet SCW 636.pdf

tweeter:
http://www.morel.co.il/products/pdf/Tweeters/ST/Specs sheet ST1308.pdf

but for most of us a lesser version would offer good VFM too
woofer:
http://www.morel.co.il/products/pdf/Woofers/CAW/Specs sheet CAW 938.pdf

This woofer should give a F3 of about 42Hz (low E) in about 35 liters.

midwoofer:

or
http://www.morel.co.il/products/pdf/Woofers/EW/Specs sheet ECW 536.pdf

tweeter:
http://www.morel.co.il/products/pdf/Tweeters/ET/Specs sheet ET338.pdf
or
http://www.morel.co.il/products/pdf/Tweeters/ET/Specs sheet ET448.pdf

Is this idea worth exploring? Crossover at about 150 and 2500Hz?

Altertnately if one wants to push the woofer higher one could use this midrange.

I really like Dennis Murphies new designs in the Philharmonics I, II and III. There are several driver choices such as Fountek and Raal for the tweets, B&G Neo 8 for the mid range and ScanSpeak or SB Acoustics for the Woofers! This is a completed speaker but for those drivers, the low cost and the designer, I have to say it sounds like a very high end system. Who knows, maybe Dennis would sell you something in kit form?

I also forgot to mention, the design of the Philharmonic speakers is very interesting. It has and open baffle, or open back tweeter and mid range that's isolated in a different compartment from the woofer, which is a transmission line design. If it's anywhere close to the sound of the DreamScapes, which also uses and Accuton ceramic mid, it will certainly be high end enough!

What I could not fathom was why Dennis used a $80 midrange in the Neo8 with a $300 tweeter in the RAAL 10D (see links below) when most of what we are sensitive to is in the midrange region.

Bohlender Graebener Neo8-PDR Planar Transducer
RAAL 70-10D RAAL Ribbon Tweeter (with optional Amorphous Core): Madisound Speaker Store

Navin,

Dennis Murphy is a pretty good designer, so I'm guessing it:

1. Sounded as good, or better, than anything else he considered

2. Was easier to blend seamlessly with the RAAL

3. Was the only driver within a set price range, that actually delivered the required performance.

The cost of a driver has very little to do with it's sound, or performance. Most of the magic is in the crossover anyway, and that's what Dennis Murphy is very good at.

Zaph has some interesting things to say about ribbons and B&Gs.

Personally I like my ribbon despite Zaphs findings but then I only use it above 12k.

Also from what I have seen (and heard about) most of those super expensive, exotic (ceramic and what have you) drivers require a lot of massaging to get them to behave as well as conventional ones. Not worth the cash or the grief IMO.

Oh I am sure that Dennis considered performance and the way the drivers matched before anything else. My observation was not meant ot cast any aspirations on Dennis's design abilities or ability to choose drivers. I am sorry if it came out that like that.

Both the RAAL drivers and B&G drivers are highly respected by many designers.

Navin,

I didn't think you were criticizing Dennis at all. If I came across as suggesting that you were, I certainly apologize. .

No problem.

Hello!
Im serching for my next DIY-kit (or drawings for new loudspeakers, x-overs).
Im looking for a kit up to about 10.000$. (Love the look of Accuton drivers.)
3-way or 4-way speaker. Links anyone?

Coming back the to VACS's originial request....

What about....using a RAAL with Accuton mids and woofer.
Tweeter: RAAL 70-10D RAAL Ribbon Tweeter (with optional Amorphous Core): Madisound Speaker Store
Midwoofer: Accuton C90-6-089 5" Ceramic Cone Woofer/Midrange: Madisound Speaker Store
Woofer: Accuton S280-6-282 11" Sandwich Cone Woofer: Madisound Speaker Store

Just the drivers will run you $5000 per pair.

A little less expensive would be SEAS/Audiotechnology drivers with RAAL/LCY tweeter. Shinobiwan has covered the AT/RAAL combo so here is the SEAS/LCY combo (which would be cheaper than a AT/RAAL combo).
Tweeter: LCY-130 Ribbon Tweeter 130 mm Round: Madisound Speaker Store
Midwoofer: SEAS Excel W16NX-001 (E0049-08) 6" Magnesium Cone Woofer 8 ohm: Madisound Speaker Store
Woofer: SEAS Excel W26FX-001 (E0026) 10" Aluminum Alloy Cone: Madisound Speaker Store

and for VFM you could consider these: HiVi/Vifa/Dayton.
Tweeter: Hi-Vi RT2C-A Isodynamic Tweeter, 176 mm rnd, 93dB: Madisound Speaker Store
Midwoofer: VIFA NE149W-04, 5.25" Woofer, 4 ohm: Madisound Speaker Store
Woofer: Dayton Audio RS270-8 10" Reference Woofer

The advantage of using a 5" midwoofer is that you can add rear/center speakers to extend these systems for surround sound use. For stereo only use 4 Audiotechnology 22cm C-quenze woofers, B&G Neo 10 Mid and RAAL tweeter in a tower like Lindell's below would be the way to go.

This could have been very very good Navin!!!
But then again - do not know how to make a excellent xover.
And that is the most important thing as we all know.
