Tacet is a German label founded in Stuttgart in 1989 by engineer Andreas Spreer, which focuses on classical music released in different formats (vinyl, CD, SACD, DVD-Audio and Blu-Ray). Tacet released all nine symphonies composed by Ludwig Van Beethoven recorded by the Polish Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Wojciech Rajski, using only tube microphones and amplifiers during the recording process. The recording of the 5th symphony was released in 2008 on a 180-gram LP, and it was reissued on 2017 with two differences: It received the half-speed mastering treatment, and side B was cut so the cartridge rides the record groove from the inside out. Both features can also be found in the reissues of the 7th and 9th symphonies (the latter as a double LP, with side D playing from the inside out). They cut the last side of these LPs this way because, since these symphonies have particularly loud dynamics on their final movement, the idea is to take advantage of the faster speed at which the stylus must travel in the outer edge area of a vinyl record because of the larger circumference, which works better for loud music and results in more clarity, better bass response and no or very little groove distortion on a well-setup turntable. Many tactics have been used to fight inner groove distortion, and this is the one chosen by Tacet. Regardless of the more or less effectiveness of this approach, it surely makes for a very unusual record.
