Interesting drum recordings:
I think the brief solo in Rush's "By-tor and the Snow dog" sounds fairly good cranked.

The intro to ELP's "The Sheriff" has a nice dynamic recording that sounds more like a 'kit in a room' than most other tracks I have heard.

Rush's "YYZ" is sort of a drum piece, lots of interesting fill variations, although Lifeson's guitar solos far outshine Peart on this track.

The Drum solo in the middle of Jethro Tull's "Thick as a Brick" is fairly tasty.

The energetic Santana "Soul Sacrifice" drum performance by Michael Shrieve from "Woodstock"

This one from Morgan Agren is just amazing - I found a nice HQ copy of the video somewhere and I watch it several times a year.

Drummers, in random order:
Danny Carey from Tool
Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater
Neal Peart from Rush
Bill Bruford from Yes / King Crimson / Japan?, etc...
Vinny Colaiuta from various
Carl Palmer from ELP

this doesn't look all that easy to play -

I like Neil Peart but, an obscure drummer/ drum solo that has good quality is Munetaka Higuchi from Loudness.
The one in particular is from Live-Loud-Alive. Not the best technically, but very good to listen to. Nice sound from an 80's recording. The Yamaha drum set helps.:D

Nicko McBrain is worth listening to.

Also, Reed St. Mark on " Into The Pandemonium" from Celtic Frost.

These might not be the best drummers or recordings and not even solo's (sorry) but drummers I enjoy.

I have played drums for 20+ years just for back round info on me.;)

The Godsmack drummers don't seem to impressive, sorry.

Just listened to Thomas Lang. Incredible.

One of the more interesting and "intimate" - if that's the right word- short solos and following accompaniment I've heard in quite a while was Terry Bozzio, "Duende" (Tony Levin and Steve Stevens) on Narada Gypsy
Actually some pretty decent picking on this one as well. :D
BOZZIO LEVIN STEVENS DUENDE - YouTube

Sure, he (Terry) can get as carried away on a big @$$ concert show off kit as the next guy, but he can also exhibit some delightful finesse

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

top 5 in no order:
dave weckel
carter buford,
virgil donati,
niel pert,
steve gadd,
buddy Rich,

and yes, i know my top 5 is 6 ;-)

Malachi,

jerry garcia was a great guitarist, no doubt.

however, perhaps you are thinking of mickey hart, the drummer? he's still alive and drumming.

a jerry garcia drum solo would be interesting, indeed. ;) dunno if he ever did one, though.

/andrew - thinks the dead were pretty cool.

Actually Jerry did play drums at least once in public.
Not the best drums but perhaps the most amusing. April 1, 1980 ;)

As for my 2¢, it's definitely not a solo but amazing (and yea, Jerry is on two tracks but not drumming) Diga (by Diga Rhythm Band)
