and now she is singing

mounted a mid horn with compression driver
a 1.5uf in series, fore a first try

huge difference
can't really hear much sound from the mid/tweeter horn
but now I can hear what I'm playing
even the low notes are much better

I had so blurred sound I was about to throw it away
funny that something this simple can make the whole difference

hey, you gotta hear, its even more crazy than I imagined

as said, I started out with a series 1.5uf on tweeter
then went on to 3uf, with another 1.5uf

that sounded real sweet

but I still couldn't hear any real sound coming directly from tweeter
I thought, lets try bigger cap
mounted yet another 1.5uf, increasing to 4.5uf in total

and whack, my bass guitar went nuts
suddenly impossible to tune the bloddy bass
didn't sound really different, as such
just out of tune

hmm, removed 1.5uf, and back to the 'magic' 3.0uf
and some minor quick tuning
showed to be a piece of cake

sounds weird ?
well, yeah, it is

I really like them spanish gypsy tunes
and guitar tuning has to be close to perfect to sound right

and it tells me that designing bass guitar speakers may not be so 'simple' at all
and I wonder if a guitar speaker would be even more tricky
but its probably about the same thing

just a thought..... what's the damping factor of the amp? class D amps tend to have very low damping factors (even compared to tube amps sometimes, the cheaper it is the lower it is). sounds like you are getting a lot of interaction between the amp and the load, and loaded horns are hardest to tame. it seems that the tighter you coupled the mid with it's loaded horn to the amp (by using larger capacitances) the more pronounced the interaction became. cheap class D amps have no feedback, and their voltage gains are determined strictly by the ratio of the modulator's triangle wave to the rail voltages of the outputs. there is no mechanism for controlling the effects of back EMF from the speakers in a case like this, and the back EMF interacts with the amp's output. try the experiment again with a classAB SS amp and you will see what i mean. there are ways of lowering the damping factor of a class AB amp if the sound isn't what you want.

hi Jed, yeah, I know

its a 15watt Crate guitar 'combo' :clown:

I'm working on it

but, I will remind you that problems described above are exactly the same without the tweeter horn

I know a lot of those problems come from my 'amp', but I still find it interesting

why , you bought one ?

:cheerful:

this amp looked like the answer to my dreams

I have considered DIY
but cost money too

to be honest
I got tired of talking(thinking) a lot about impedances
and I have too many other projects

or maybe I just decided that some things are better left to professionals
I should be able to tell you more in a few days, if interested

well, there is power output fore a slave woofer ;)

what is wrong with instrument woofers

specs on many cheaper woofers indicate very poor control

big magnets, but still highish Qts, despite the relatively light cone

this indicates poor magnet motor design, with too big voice coil gap
and to get the very high sensitivity, cones are very thin and light
the result is a ressonating sound
some like that
I don't, its hurting my ears too much
I want it clean, and nice

next bass cab project, a modified unity horn :p

not that my present horn isnt good
it does work quite well
HUGE tone, which was my goal
but it has one major problematic fault
driver output on front is out of phase with side horn mouths

well, my main issue right now with the unity horn is the design complications, caused by driver mounting/assembling
and the size, ofcourse

in the end, to me its basicly the available drivers that determine my design decisions
and right now looking at some pretty interesting new woofers from Faital, model numbers ending on **10
not really sure where it leads me yet
