Yes, of course.
Right now I use with ASUS CDROM CD-S520/A and test with
old pioneer 16x cdrom, it work quite well.
I plan to make my own diy Cd Transporter with Top Loader.

ah, anyone have a picture of the back of an IDE drive? i dont remember an audio out on the back of a drive.

That 's right. And if you can find some cdrom drive that have
digital out like my ASUS CD-S520. I use digital out to my DAC coupling by 30 turn on small ferrite ring core and sound good.
