Everyone keeps pointing to the EL509. It looks like a nice tube, and I can feed it 3-350V for UL, or 540V for pentode based on my transformers.

With a 35W dissipation, why would it be better than the 40-42W dissipation of the 6550 or KT88?

Will a quad of them perform better into 1.5K than a quad of KT88s?

No, 4 pairs of KT88 (look at my former post where I gave the exact details) is the optimal, Sowter knew how to design transformers and this transformer is clearly designed to suit 4 pairs of KT88 in ultralinear.
If you use any other tubes make sure the Zout is aprrox. the 1,2kohm this
transformer is designed for, otherwise Q and frequencyresponse will be less than optimal.

I finally got these and they need a wire wheeling, but they are huge!!

That's a hammond 193Q next to it. I'm going to salvage this chassis I started a while back with a steel plate. I am going to add one more pair of output tubes and go fixed bias With three pairs of KT88s.
