The "Elsinore Project" Thread

Another build

Just finished a build as well, super fun process - and they sound great too! Now just need to figure out a more permanent place to put them…

Thanks for the great design and supportive community!

Hamlet Update:

Things are now getting very close, see below.

Hamlet_PCB_865W.jpg

I designed the PCB to work with both Elsinore and Hamlet. Note below that there is no L1 used in the Hamlet Mk6, but that this is used later in the Elsinore Mk6. I have not yet decided about supplying the PCB, but if I do, I will sell the L4 18mH inductors together since I have ordered the same quantity. They will then also be able to be supplied with the Waveguides.

Note that L4 18mH inductor, this has a DC resistance of 3R2 and that is in series with two stacked 10 Watt resistor that are 3R9 each (1R95).

Note also, that a small amount of silicone is used under each component so that there is no way that they can rattle or vibrate. See below, this is available in Australia from Bunnings hardware stores and elsewhere. It is great because it allows a small bead to be applied and a sealed top so that it can be used for many jobs later. Note that it is also clear colour.

Below is the modeled frequency response, electrical phase and impedance plots.

Thanks for the kind words all!

Gorgeous veneer and physical construction, however i am slightly worried about mutual inductance in the crossover.

Based on this I put the close proximity coils upside down - the vertically aligned coils are in the same direction but they have some separation so it shouldn't be too much of an issue. I've measured the frequency response with REW and the results are pretty convincing (though not entirely sure why 10-20k is missing). Distortion isn't bad either.

gjcourt,

Beautiful speakers!

What veneer is this?

Bubinga veneer - got it from veneersupplies.com

[The crossovers will soon be mounted inside.]

I am listening to the Hamlets right now and have also taking in-room RTA measurements. These indicated that the modeling was right in the ball-park, but two values needed tweaking and all was good.

The response above 1KHz is similar to the Elsinores but deviates slightly below that frequency. There is a slight slope of a few dB down to 300 Hertz, from there it is flat to 100 Hertz. This is measured when the speaker is well away from boundaries and likely to flatten out anyway in many cases, like when in centre-channel use. I know that some of you may only build one single Hamlet for that use. So this was taken into account or when used closer to walls.

But Hamlets also needs to work as both stereo pairs and in potential multi-channel use. The compromise seems not to be negative in any way. A most pleasing outcome.

The best angle to listen to for the flattest response is 15-20 degrees off-axis, slightly more than Elsinores, but I doubt if it would be noticed. Again this should suit when used as a single centre-channel speaker, where it will be used laterally and be a bit below the eye-line and under the screen.

In my room, I put the stereo Hamlets in the same spot as where I have my Elsinores. With the final tweaking done and listening to it, the the balance ended up with where I wanted it, so since this an area that is so well regarded by Elsinore listeners and comes up constantly in comments, the balance . We don't want to lose that with the Hamlets and I am satisfied we have not.

Even when well away from the rear wall, where the front is 1.2M from the rear wall (see above picture, there is significant in-room bass extension down to 30 Hertz, both measured (this is using measure pink noise RTA) and hearing.

All-in-all I was very pleased with the final result, bass and upwards and that balance. The track "Landmark" by Antonio Forcione via Tidal, this track has an interesting bass that feels almost infrasonic and the fact that is coming across was especially satisfying. Hunt down the track and have a listen.

Cheers :), Joe

Congratulations, Joe; it's always good to see the end coming of a long time project.

I'm sure they will be very fine.

The Elsinores were too big for my space. I dismantled mine after two months, and put the parts away to wait.

What is your idea of minimum distance with that driver spacing?

Thanks for all your work on both designs, David
