Dome tweeters that compete with good ribbons?

If you can overlook the very narrow vertical dispersion, perhaps.

That is often more an advantage but that depends pretty much on what kind of listening situation you got. If you want the AMT to be crossed over that low, chances are you got something bigger below it and if you got big speakers, it's not far fetched you also got a big room with likely not too close listening distance. Yes, that are assumptions and I'm not saying that's the solution for everything but the big AMTs performances are impressive in some areas. It is - as always - a compromise you have to decide for yourself. But you can't claim you cannot cross over AMTs low.

But once you get to the $250-300 level, there are more sensible choices

Nowadays you can get very good AMTs for even around 100-150 bucks.

The Aurum Cantus AST 2560 is a good bet around that price point. It can cross as low as 2khz with a steep filter.

Hi Bill,

The AST2560 is the only AMT that I've used but it is my favorite and it's affordable compared to the high end domes and ribbons. I also own a pair of Raals that are very nice but the AST2560 is my 1st choice for accuracy and realism. Curt crossed them at about 2.3K in the Bordeaux. BTW, a Bordeaux kit is now available at Meniscus.

My order of preference is, AMT, Ribbon and finally domes. The accuracy of the AST2560 is the best I've heard from a tweeter. Mundorf, etc. may be as good or better but I've not used them. The AST2560 is a killer tweeter for the money, IMHO. I've used a LOT of Fountek NEOCD3.0 ribbons and like them for the price but the Raal is a step up. If I wanted an affordable ribbon that crossed low, Bozhen would be my choice today. TLabs was my favorite dome but I read last week they have ceased production and closed the doors. Too bad, it was a very nice sounding dome.

Here's a measurement at 2.8V. of the AST2560 we used in the Bordeaux.

Jim

Wow ... One page to four, overnight. T-Labs going out of business SUCKS. I had wanted to eventually use a pair of their carbon fiber tweeters in a project.
I have never even heard a pair of TLabs.
The thread went just as I had hoped, and I'm enjoying learning what I can. I do not necessarily feel ribbons are always better than domes. I just know, the RAAL 70-20XR Amorphous Core Tweeters, I once owned, were the best I have personally heard, in MY opinion. I have not heard Be domes yet. I just know the vibrancy and immediacy of the ribbons were amazing. Now, after using the Heils, I am starting to think I like AMTs sound and presentation even better. If modern AMTs are an improvement over the Monopole Heils, then I am very impressed.

Can't see on tapatalk where u are based but grab a pair while you can. They are robust tweeters, altho look for more recent stock with grills (my Be TLabs don't..)

I have ns1000m and I use Raal ribbons instead of the yamaha beryllium tweeter. I had focal 1027be before the Yams. There's loads of good tweeters out there, the mundorf at is good as are the various accutons and there's plenty of good soft domes too. The RAALs are excellent but I could live with many of the better dome types including the ring radiators and the satori.
