which is fine but don't work for me because
1. I ran out of space for CDs as the records take up too much room so 80% of my music was download.
2. Memsahib has a habit of sneaking CDs into her own personal library
3. When I re-jigged the hifi to go on shelves something had to give, and that something was the living room cd player and the bluray is so ***** slow I can't be bothered to use it.

So we mainly end up spinning vinyl in the evenings as it's actually easier.

Which needs windows or MacOs. If I have a windows machine I can run GMPC. Which means a windows tablet, at which point I might as well have an old laptop sitting there just doing GMPC duties. I just have an odd use case.

Also Linux.

Didn’t you just in preceding page knock the validity of the claims of the average reviewer? Tsk tsk!

Do your own homework 🤣

Your needs aren’t as odd or unique as you might believe.

:idea:I think I'll wander over :wchair: to my alphabetically arranged wall of CDs, :cd: select one :scratch2: and read the sleeve notes while I listen...............life can be SO complicated....

You can read more than liner notes in Plex, also band biographies, explore similar artists, see photos and see connections in genre, musicians, or other similarities between other items in your collection.

It’s like comparing a horse drawn wooden carriage to Prius.

I can fit your entire cd collection at full quality in the palm of my hand- that to me is simplicity and lack of complication.

If I want to live in antiquity I’ll pull an LP off the shelf, otherwise I’ll take the fruits of a fully digital experience.

I too was forced to choose between vinyl and cd, and chose vinyl and digitized the rest.

Can you find similar artists to Weather Report for me? People and algorithms have tried not very successfully, they seem to remain unique

Omar Hakim who was their drummer for awhile once said with a reminiscing smile, "Joe [Zawinul] liked his funky waltzes in 6." Six-eight time that is, and with a funk lilt, of course. Problem is, it took exceptional jazz musicians to pull it off. I'm not aware of a similar collection of folks.

What is it you like about what they did? The grooves, the improvisation, can you pin it down a little more?

They changed a lot of course throughout their time, and had a varied line up, the constants being Zawinul and Shorter, (I'm a big Shorter fan too). I think what I like most, is the sound worlds that Zawinul created, they literally transport me, and remind me of places and times that I've never been to, I know that sounds weird. So although it's probably mainly Joe's influence, and Joe's band really, it's still what he managed to do with the Weather Report line-ups, I'm not such a big fan of what he went on to do with the Syndicate

Oddly linux tablets with a nice docking station are also hard to come by and looking at plexamp its not designed to work the way I wanted. I've tried 5 or 6 smart phone based front ends and they all fail miserably as designed for dealing with playlists which I don't do and don't want to do

As for 'doing my homework' . I've been looking to find a solution for 5 years now. The nearest we have got is the Wife's surface tablet running gmpc but we can't dedicate that to controlling the music player.

The linx tab (pic attached) should do the job but has that crappy microusb charger out the side. If only logitech hadn't killed squeezebox.

If only logitech hadn't killed squeezebox.

I finally broke down and bought a used Squeezebox on eBay. When they were still made I kept waiting for the price to drop, I thought they were a bit pricey for what they did. It never occurred to me that Logitech would just kill it off. How many times has Logitech bought a company and then dropped the product before they could figure it out?

Anyway I love the Squeezebox remote, plus I can drive it from any browser in the house.

You guys might find this naive. One Christmas as a gift my son ripped our bins of DVD's, etc. to a 4T Drive and set up an old desktop with a stripped down Linux install to play them all. We accidentally brought the drive to Florida and just plugged it into the USB port of the TV here to see what happens. I'm so behind my TV at home only shows side shows of JPEG's off the USB.

The LG Smart TV seems to have all the decoders built in and plays everything, I would never want anymore features than this.

The annoying part with both my LG TV and the bluray player is navigating directories using a TV remote. But that's how I play some movies. I've just been spoiled with the playbook in the kitchen. On it's stand, always charged, always on. quick and easy to navigate around. Similar to how squeezebox was in the good old days. only thing it lacks is a good search when you have a large library.

If I was happy to have the TV on whilst I listening to music it would all be easier.
