my dream is to have a clockwork lotus 7 clone again. ld replace it with that would give such sterling service.

Funny you say that, the US Caterham Lotus 7 dealer was about 1/2 a mile from my home here in Cambridge (US of course). As of less than 5 years ago there was still at least one exact Prisoner version on the road here. Unsafe at any speed, quoted from the designer himself.

Not aware CABC ever said that about the 7, although he killed his fair share of F1 drivers in his quest for lightness. I have a lot of friends who own them one of whose father did die in a side impact which is the biggest weakness in the car.

I drove one in Texas a couple of times and they are not really ideal for playing with American traffic. Where I live would be ideal and I see them regularly come past the house. No airbags, no power brakes, no power steering, no traction control, no ABS. You drive it and if you take liberties it will bite you. To most people an anachronism. Like vinyl but dangerous.

Then how can you possibly go on about 16/44.1 being inadequate compared to 24/96 when you're not even playing 16/44.1 files that are stored on the same medium and played back through the same system as your 24/96 files, but instead are spinning up physical CDs on a $300 CD player?

:eek: That is what I said from day one !!! I wondered out loud if the lack of a CD player and CD mfr'ed process had anything to do with it. What in particular about all that, with its perfect error correction, etc could make a difference -- bits, perhaps is all i see as different and dither. I NEVER said they were both stored files in memory or any thing like that. If anyone would like to do a test, I would be interested in a test that at least resembles my situation.

RNMarsh -in my opinion, fibre optic signal transmission does no favours to digital reply, coaxial is more direct and sounds better to my ears. Grounding issues are better solved by using well designed equipment or even isolation transformers.

I would tend to agree. The digital cable port was taken by a better player.
The CD player which I compared against 24/96 stored files is not my best music source but listen to it often for background mostly. So, I am very familiar with the music sound. I have to find out the jitter spec thru that BenchMark f.o. input.

Any speed is an exaggeration but I took the quote from one of the Prisoner sites where he stated in an interview that as shown he would never risk driving it that fast.

I drove a series 2 for a number of years in Silicon Valley traffic. Rarely got past freeway speeds. Mine was reclaimed from track service so it had a major roll bar installed. Lots of fun once you get the hang of it and the later twincam series 3 probably would have been enough to get into real trouble (if it didn't break. . .)

Could be that too. But getting only theory for answeres --- which dont always work so perfectly in practice.... .

There needs to be some acknowledgment to that as well.

Listening tests.... I have done them in many locals and I dont always fall in with the majority... including the one I did awhile ago at DIYAudio (5-6 months ago?).... so listening tests results of others is, in this case, not too helpful. But, it could be used as Plan B fall-back :).

I saw no need for dither on 24b as I showed at -90. This morning, in an email, I asked Bob Speer of CD Mastering Services "--- dither is used only when reducing the word length. .... for 24/96 HD dither is not used" for clients such as HDTracks and others for hiRes downloads.

I'm going to go do some real world comparison tests to get to the bottom of my question(s).

I believe most ADC's have dither as part of the core design. Some have selectable options buried in the registers. Dithering becomes important when using a DAW and doing any changes to a track. if the track is unchanged (no gain, EQ, mixing, effects) then no dithering is needed since it still has the original dither. There are test tracks that have no dither but unlikely to find music recorded in the last 25 years that was not dithered at the initial ADC.

I'm not sure what benefits come from 32 bit floating point in terms of the actual data. It may make some of the processing easier and fits the memory (32 bit or 64 bit) as well as 24 bit with fill in each word.

Finding an ADC with 24 bit performance is unlikely. The AKM AK5394A seems to still have the best analog performance available and while good it's not 24 bits. DAC's are no better and mostly not quite as good.

Thanks for the extra info. The DAW can access the dither on-off and perhaps some filter characteristics as well. But in 24/96 files which are not down converted it isnt added and no need to. But I'll ask Benchmark what they use and if it does what you suggest it might..... but I dont think from their info on web site.

Anyway, that isnt the issue really but speculation as to why playing CD's sound worse than playing 24/96 downloaded to memory and played thru a good DAC. Fewer bits, restricting dynamic range and higher distortion came to mind.

Maybe you can venture an explanation why playing 24/96 files sound better vs playing CD? I take toslink output from CD player to BenchMark-2 input.

I thought the comment at the end that the zorbel circuit was what was in JA junk box interesting . Does one not take Stereophile Mag as a DIY blog or a business ? So there is no place in there model to buy the correct part need ? That does wonders for there Creds as it where.
