I was wondering that myself. I am not sure the WIMA caps existed back when the P was born... I also have this picture of a now "vintage" Aleph P and it's very clear those are not WIMA's. I will likely try the Panasonic's first as the Wimas are ~150.00 for the dual set. There should be no problem fitting the Panasonic's on the PCB.

ooh, apparently I did not know enough about the AP commercial issue? Thanks guys. anyways, it is nice to look at Wima MKP4's datasheets and see measured data over the full freq range, which should warrant a good performance. the other kind which also received diy praise is the metallized polyester mkt1822 by Vishay-Roederstein (smaller and probably cheaper than Wimas).

Fet testing update. Testing is completed and the sets of 12 are ready to go. There are at least 2 pairs of 610s in every set that are matched within less than 1mv for use in the gain stage. The others 610s are grouped around those values. 9610s are also pretty closely matched and typically only a few mv separate the 4 of them. Matching is not as critical for the current sources. The voltage reference used to set current is the Vbe of the transistors used. I hope to invoice and ship sometime next week but I need to find a post office that has enough staff to help with shipping a large number of packages like this. Most of them are in grocery stores and offer minimal services.

I used the MKT1822's when I first built my AP17 on Veterans boards. They sounded good and I was never entirely convinced that the BG NX I fitted in their place were an improvement. By the time the caps burn in for several hundred hours audio memory fades so it was hard to tell. The main reason I stuck with the black gates was they didn't really fit on the board well, but obviously this layout doesn't suffer the same problem.

those caps (MKP10s) are a mm wider and should still fit but will be touching each other. so MKP4s are still a default option. I am waiting for the fets from Brian (only shipped this week). I am also short of TO220 isolators and may have to improvise in order to test one board. plus I need the heatsinks made.

p.s. so the biggest screw up on the board so far is too small pads and holes for the 1000uF caps (the footprint from the standard library in the software came as such and i did not check it. they can still be soldered only not perfect. for the larger 2200uF cap I created the footprint manually and that one is Ok).

MKP10 fits just fine ;)
there is some space in betwen, but those are 100V not 250V

but mine 1000uf 100V will not fit to PCB I will have to do something about it...

will do something about it, I'm not wory :D

edit:
whell maybe I would need to buy new one (1000uF/100V) as this is double side PCB and I cant just drill two more holes...
will figure out something

I have shipped most of the FETs. I have shipped all of the ones which have had their invoices paid. Gwrskien, I just left you a private mail message.
The shipping was almost as much work as the testing. I think there are only 2 invoices left to be paid. There are also 2 people who initially signed on to the GB but I have not gotten any response to requests for contact information. I will give it another week or so and then if there is no response I will have 2 sets of FETs for anyone else who wants them.

Happy New Year!
Brian

I am also still waiting for:

JohnGeneva
tadek, and
nopants

to claim their boards. I can probably give them another two weeks and then I may release their boards to the public.

p.s. and I asked everybody before to cancel their interest in the boards if they changed their mind, didn't I? and still...

I am going with the Panasonic film caps on mine for starters. There had to be a good reason other than price that Papa used them in the production version of the P. If I don't like them I can always switch to the WIMA's. The rest of my parts will be here tomorrow from Mouser. So I will spend the morning matching fets and hopefully have my boards on line some time Tuesday.

Please let me know if additional boards available, just finished ampcamp mono blocks and I would like to try a Pass preamp with them.

one pair of boards just freed up (got a note from nopants). I will check the thread for the guys on the waiting list and contact them in the order in which they registered here.

p.s. pls check the Builder's thread for my last update since I checked the first board functionality last night :).
