Project Ryu - DIY Field Coil Loudspeaker

Hi Jef,

That explains a lot, I did a quick read up on radial speaker a I got an idea for a full range radial unit.... It looks kind of weird but it should work. Don't mind I draw the with out the magnetic system placed inside, as you can see I placed the wizzer on the outside of the cone I here the wizzer is pointing down but you can turn it both ways.

Anyway it's just an idea......

Hentai, I like your prices, I will ask around.

Hi Frank,

I'm making a radial loudspeaker. That is why it is a dome and not a cone. The whole driver is build around that idea (but did first some tests with a normal cone to compare). small magnet structure (dia.60mm) so the magnet sits "in" the cone and not under the cone otherwise the former would be to long, no spider also the spider would be to large to fit in. The advantage of a radial speaker is the 360 degree radiation and therefore a high freq. response is desirable. The peak is only impedance plot.

cheers,
Is the idea to make a radial speaker or a Bending wave speaker?

This wouldn't be too necessary in a bending wave speaker a la German Physics.

Hey guys, Im so glad this forum is alive and well. I had a question for Jef.. I had the same idea for a speaker that did no require a spider. What I mean is I like the concept of a electrostatic speaker, in that the electrical input directly controls the membrane(diaphragm). Like magnetic planar and such. So my question is if we can have devices like precision servos for manufacturing, and other precisely controlled equipment using an electrical signal we can't seem to make a speaker cone "just respond" to the input signal.

Today i had a friend of mine, who is a guitarist, come over and he had a Marshall JCM2000 DSL401 combo which he wanted me to mod.
This combo comes with a Celestion driver (more about it here Celestion G12T-100 Guitar Speaker Driver | Project Ryu Blog ) so after moding the amp i said lets try the Ryu driver on it.
We were both . What a sound, that midrange was just so incisive. I didnt expect to sound so good on instrument. Sounds best with the dual voicecoils in series and the amp switch set to 16 ohms.
PP with parallel EL84s very nice, I'm so pleased.

Hi,

I have a question I can't find the right solution for it. Just test my speaker with a paper cone for more warmth and oke it sounds better in my opinion but that is taste.
But I have still not enough low mid's and bass for a two way system. Fs 39Hz port tuned to 50Hz. I think Neo magnets with high Bl value will give more mid's and less bass (Bl of 9NA). Is this the reason? Also flat impedance curve will give more high's.
I want to put the crossover at 5Khz what is the best solution? Suggestion?
More mass but not good for the high's.
Oke probably combination of all these but there must be a main reason to start with.

Thx guys

Hi guys,

Its been a while. There are some with full inbox and my message cannot go through but what i want to say is that I've been very busy lately in creating a solution to make the field coil speakers affordable.
Based on my work so far it will be possible for a complete 12" pair to cost about 500$ a major improvement and with better 1008 steel. There will also be field coil 3" compression driver.
I am pushing to make this happen sooner but most likely it will become reality around the end of 2014 - January 2014.

I will return from time to time and let you know how it progresses.

Great news. Be prepared to handle big batches if so :D
