TPA3116D2 Amp

I am putting together a Digi-Key order. I have a YJ Blue board that I have successfully removed the stock 10uH inductors from. I would like to try 22uH inductors for my 8 ohm speakers, but would like to keep the same or almost the same foot print as the originals. Any suggestions for inductors that are available from Digi-Key?

XRK971 seemed to like the CoilCraft MSS1583 inductors for their high saturation rating.

Coilcraft MSS1583 Power Inductors

These appear to have very good specs, and should fit onto the board where the stock inductors fit.

Unfortunately, these are only available through CoilCraft, but their shipping is reasonable.. You just won't be able to save on shipping from a single location.

On another note, my Sure TPA3116 amp is due to arrive today based on USPS tracking. Does anyone have the mounting hole dimensions for this amp?

I got mine from Coilcraft directly and they are very reasonably priced. They sound great. I gave this amp to a friend who has a lot of experience with many different high end amps as he is a artist/producer/mixer. He was very impressed with them and will be using it for his main music mixing monitors. I recently got the huge SER series to play with but frankly think that the MSS series will work fine and they fit the YJ Danzz blue board.

Looking forward to your listening impressions of the new Sure board.

I measured my new Sure 3110 board which I believe has the same dimensions as the new Sure 3116.

The hole center spacing is 3-5/16" X 2-7/16"

Yes, both are the same.

I received my Sure TPA3116 amp today and installed it in a makeshift chassis. After I had everything hooked up, I was ready to plug it in and found that the Switchcraft 2.1mm x 5.5mm DC power connector wouldn't fit into the PCB-mounted power supply connector on the board.

So I had to solder on a 2P terminal block connector and add a Switchcraft chassis-mount connector. I added four 2,200uF/25V Panasonic FM caps too. It's still burning in, but so far so good.

I followed KJA 2013's advice on the speaker polarity connections, and the signal is in phase. I've checked the TPA3116 heat sink and inductors, and they are not warm at all. I'm using a 13.8VDC Astron RS-12A with upgraded caps. I'll listen to this in stock form for now for the next few days. My CineMag line level input transformers should arrive Tuesday.

Amp comparrison

Finally got round to doing a comparison between a couple of my amps and the TPA31116. The amps being compared to the 3116 were a Tubelab simple SE (5watt single ended EL34) and a Mini Aleph (single ended 12watt MOSFET designed by Nelson Pass). Both built by myself and both very good amplifiers with strong following and reputation.

Speakers were Mark Audio Alpair 10.3 in FHXL cabs, input ES9023 DAC and Jfet preamp. A friend and I provided the ears.

First compared the Tubelab and Aleph - winner gets compared to the 3116. The Aleph was agreed as better but not by a great margin - cleaner, more top end energy.

Aleph was then compared with first 3116 - fully moded blue/black board with Meanwell 15v SMPS. Much to our surprise the 3116 was a clear winner, clean tight bass, detailed, airy mids and upper frequency. Really enjoyable to listen to.

Then came my 3116, again fully moded blue black board with toroid supply and LM338 regulator. Close to the prior 3116 but more airy, spacious again.

Wow, hard to believe that my precious tube and mosfet amps were clearly beaten by this little digital amp, in all respects. No, wasn't double blind, we did our best to get the levels the same for each listening but we were both agreed the outcome was quite clear.

For the record my 3116 has:
220uf Nichicon Gold Line PS caps
33uf Bourns inductors
.39uf film LC caps
Snubber mod
Upgraded bootstrap caps
WIMA MKP10 input caps bypassed with .022uf ERO MKP1837
120va toroid trafo with LM338 regulator (18v supply)

xrk971: your 8 ohm speaker is likely to be 20 ohm, your 4 ohm speaker closer to 8 ohm most of the time. Correct speaker-impedance with R/L/C Zobel and your speaker will have constant phase too and filter will have limited or no peaking, without correction your single/double fullrange unit speakers phase will not be constant at all, so then outputfilterphase is minor problem. When speakerimpedance isn't constant, phase isn't either.

I've received the X7R bootstrap caps and Pana Oscon caps from Digikey and just had them installed. The music are much more defined and more joyful to listen to. Bass notes are very defined and now am also able to hear some light piano notes that I was not quite able to hear before. Sound stage is bigger.

I did try out the pre-filter snubber mod but didn't like it although it seemed to tame the harshness but also felt the overall volume was reduced as well.

Today I removed the snubber mod and then replaced the bootstrap caps and the Pana Oscon caps. I really like the result. My speaker is a pair of cheap JBL2800.

The problem during the mod was the solder kept plugging the holes and took me a while to get them out so I could put the new parts in.

I am glad the bootstrap caps and OSCON's worked out for you. Although surprised to hear that bootstrap snubber caused reduction in volume. I am not sure how that is possible if you were using 330pF caps and 10R resistors. I did not notice any change on volume on mine just reduction of harshness.

Anyhow it is always good to hear when folks get their amp to sound excellent and hear stuff they could not hear before.

A spring loaded solder vacuum is key for getting solder out of those holes.

ChrisMmm,
Thanks for the comparison. We have been waiting a long time for someone with amps and speakers to compare. Do you mean 33uH Bourns inductors or 22uH inductors?
It was fun and very revealing to do the comparison. Also showed me what the Alpair/FHXL are capable of. Have to say this morning I find myself in disbelief but 2 pairs of ears don't lie.

Yep, 33uh and .39uf caps - the 10.3 have a steeply rising impedance so I worked on 12ohm.
