The Boominator - another stab at the ultimate party machine

Boominator + Tham15 Sub Cargo bike...under way, help needed.

Hi folks
I've justed started construction of a cargo bike like this pic.
It'll be to cart about a 600w Tham15 Sub I have along with my Boominator for some Festivals this Summer.
I could do with a little help in how to configure inputs and X-over.
My Boominator is DSP controlled and all setup and sounding perfect.
I'm planning to power the Sub with a Class D car Amp off a deep cycle leisure battery.
Would it be as simple as splitting the the input signal between the Sub and Boominator and using the X-over and filters in the Sub Amp?
That would make it hard to control the levels and it would be nice to have one volume Pot that controlled the lot though.
All input will be greatly received :)

Hi guys!
I was on a festival for a about 2 weeks ago, we had a little ion block rocker with us. It worked good, the only thing i would like to improve was the battery time so i started reading and found this thread! Amazing!

I want to build one...
BUT
there is no way to get a double pair of HP-10w before my next festival. Are there any substitutes? I understand that it may be more expensive and i need to calculate on another box.

Or should i go for a mini boominator?
How loud is the miniboominator and how long can you keep on rocking on 100% volume with 12v 14.4 ah

Will be building on the Maxamp20.

Thank you
Elm

Total play time on full volume before clipping with a SLA battery = (Battery capacity in ampere hours * 0,8) / 0,35. (T=Ah*0,8/0,35). Some 'reverse engineering' will give you the needed capacity for a certain play time: time * 0,35 / 0,8.

I haven't heard the Mini yet, but I can almost guarantee you that it'll beat the Blockrocker. Keep in mind that it's only a quarter of its size!.

Good to hear! Think solved things with the boominator!

I found speakers at https://www.intertechnik.de/Shop/Loudspeakers/P-Audio/H-Series/_HP10IT_1768,en,4354,52326

As i understand it´s the same thing as the hp-10w, we will see! is the maxamp20 still a good choice? I thing i´ve saw something about a amp designed for the boominator.

and the tweeters! I think i will go with the Monacor MPT-001 ( Monacor MPT-001 - Ljudia - Multimedia Hemelektronik Karaoke PA anläggning DJ utrustning Ljus utrustning) do i need any resistens for these guys? (or do you have a better alternative?)

So this is my checklist so far:
Wood, screws and etc for the box. (check)
2x 12v 7,2 AH battery (check)

hp-10w (it?) (ordered)
Monacor MPT-001 (?)
Maxamp20 (?)

Thank you
elm

Nope, can't be used.

MaxAmp is the go-to amp ATM. There is indeed a special Boominator amp in development; a lot more expensive, a lot more features.

Actually the HP10IT is a HP10W, interteknik have invented their own name for the HP10W

Dont get it confused with the HP10T which is different.... The extra I makes all the difference....

why did they do this? ........ nobody knows?

My boominator has begun to act real cranky. After about 30 sec the amp seems to restart. Sometimes it keeps on restarting, and sometimes it's just dead silent, although the lights are on. I'm thinking there's something wrong with the amp. It's a cheap class D from China. Time to get a new one or does anyone have any thoughts of what might be the cause?
Cheers!

I guess it's my time to share a few pitures :)

It all started back in january, where i began ordering parts for my Boominator Mini (Aurasound NS525 255)

I made the electronict room 80mm to fit four Headway LiFePO4 10Ah cells, and had a custom aluminium front panel made.

I chose to have a latching switch for on/off, a speakon plug for power in/out and a type d blanking plate with a 6mm hole for a female minijack plug.

I made an error while designing the front plate... The screw holes are +/- 1mm to far away from the center, so i had to drill new holes... Otherwise everything looks great.

I bought the wood and had it cut out - won't get i done at that place another time.. Price was great, plywood was great but cuts were a bit uneven. Oh well, life goes. I used a hole saw for the bracing, and rounded the corners a little:

Time for the crossovers. This was a lot of fun, since i love electronics and soldering :) I think it ended up great

While doing all this work I started to get hungry. I was doing all the work in my mothers basement, so i found something good :D

Time for the front panels. I had a 127mm holesaw, but I finaly had an excuse to buy a router, so I had to get one. After playing with it for a while, I figured it out and made some nice holes. I made a 45° cut to give it a nice look and to make sure there wasn't any "sharp" edges.

I painted the holes before mounting anything, just to make sure I could get it all covered. Here's an early view of the final result. You can also see four holes on the top, theese are used for a handle.

I used kick-proof nylon cloth as speaker grills, and monted the tweeters in four small pieces of wood, so i could place the nylon cloth between the tweeter units and the speaker cabinet. Woofers are mounted the standard way, so nothing special here. Everything was glued up (and a few nails). I used the router and a flush trim bit to make the hole in the wood for the frontpanel, after glueing everything together. This way i made sure, the hole in the front wood, would fit perfectly with the electronics compartment. Here you can see everything while i was painting it with Warnex paint:

Sunday morning, a few hours before Roskilde festival, the female minijack died, and since i only had a really short cable for my Maxamp, i had to make i go between the cabinet and the aluminium front panel... ugly solution and not good in rain since i couldn't tighten the front panel, but it worked, and i didn't have time for anything else. Here you can see the final result from the Boominator meetup:

Oh, another fun story... I chose to buy a $10 china solar charge controller - bad choice. It couldn't charge and discharge the batteries at the same time, and after five days it died completely. The fuse was soldered on, but even after making a short circuit, the board didn't work, although the LED's on the board worked again. Lesson learned, don't buy things too cheap

While I'm at it, here's a picture from a standard morning at Roskilde. Using a peg? (the things to hold the tents to the ground) as a spoon, I could put tomato paste on some crispbread. Worked great, and I could use my Boominator Mini as a small table :D

Good work Thombi!

I saw your Mini V1 at the Roskilde Meet.
(Ours were the only minis there, mine was the V2)

Yours looked good and I liked your use of the 4 pole speakon for break out cables.
Also like that you fitted a 10Ah battery in there.

The meet was fun though it would have been nice to have got to listen to the individual systems properly.

I managed to get my V2 home safe and sound. (Yay!)

Although we didn't use it all day and all night like some camps, we still used it a fair bit.
It has a LifePo4 8.4Ah and after 6 days at Roskilde, one half day at home, and charging my iphone 4 times, the voltage still read 11.6V.

So super pleased with Roskilde 2014 and the Mini V2's performance.
Thanks again Saturnus and looking forward to hearing about the new amplifier projects you mentioned...

Lukteveld,

The orange box was a solar powered non boominator boombox.

I sadly didnt get to compare the v2 to anything.
Mostly there were at least 6 boominators hooked up to a distribution amplifier playing at the same time so didnt really get to hear anything on its own.

Obviously the v2 will take a beating from its bigger siblings but our camp loved the sound and volume of the v2. And though there is always ambient noise at a festival it had a nice full sound provided you weren't too far away.

I do wish I had got to hear Thombi's v1 though.

If you live near Copenhagen (Vesterbro), feel free to come by for a beer and some music. I'm probably going to use it as TV soundbar or hooked up to my pc, when it is at home.

Sound quality is very good, but I might add a subwoofer in the long run, if it's going to be used for watching movies
