Frugel-Horn Mk3

I guess the greatest improvement I noticed was the decrease in harshness. While listening to jazz, the horns would produce sounds that I consider fatiguing. With the improved chamfer, those same pieces of music no longer have that fatiguing sound to them. The other improvement I noticed was an openness after the proper chamfer. The lack of openness can best be compared to cupping your hands around your mouth when talking or listening through a tube.
Does that make sense?
Mike

Thanks for the feedback Mike. Yes it does make sense :)

I can't add anything technical as I don't know what most of the terminology means!!! I did add another set of twins to the Frugal family though. Born 2 days ago & already starting to find their full voice using 126en's

I inset magnets to the front edges to hold speaker grills & protect the drivers from my cat. DO NOT do this unless you waterproof them in some way. They have created black dots that show through the iron on edging. So much for my invisible grill mounts!!!

OMG! Please tell me more about that turntable!

OMG! Please tell me more about that turntable!

I think the turntable isn't what you think it is, it's a Chinese knock off of a clearaudio. I took a massive risk as the only info I could find about this brand was a you tube video showing a wobbly platter. I emailed the guy first to make sure he checked my turntable & unipivot arm, I did have some teething problems & all caused by my "UK" alphason stand stand that can take an 80kg tv but bowed under 35 kg & I didn't notice so it affected speed stability. The stainless cover is courtesy of my cat that decided my unipivot arm wire strands were a new toy!!!! Love that cat.... The red wood sandwiched between the 2 layers was put there by me as it was impossible to clean between the gap. I'm happy with it now & can't wait for my new frugels to run in a bit so mt TT can give them something to sing about.

Curious re the magnet grill holders.
Did you use the typical Neodym magnet discs or rods?
Or the typically black ferrite types?
Inset into the baffle or?
I ask as neos are typically chrome plated. Neo oxidizes fatally in the presence of Oxygen, ergo the necessary plating/encapsulation.

I used neo's. Rather than wait for delivery off ebay I dismantled the sticks from geomag and took the magnets from the ends. I now have one dark spot and a lighter one on one speaker and one light one on the other!!! They may have reacted with the heat from the iron as I put the edging on. I could tiny coloured round little stickers but not exactly invisible, should have put some sort of covering first. Been listening to these all day for the first time using my turntable and........... WOW!!! I've gone through every SKY album and love these speakers.

Inset into the side panels, there are 4 more in each grill as well but these are now covered with the fabric.

Arckivio - which drivers are those?

For the little magnets, I use 1/4" x 1/4" rods from Lee Valley, plated as Bare notes, and have never had a problem with staining or oxidizing through the veneer. Sometimes there's scorching marks from the iron, but those can happen near any edge or cut-out, and are easily sanded out?

FE126 with bezel covered. On 1st glance i too thot A7 MOAP, but looked closer because he said FE126/

dave

2mm clear polycarb turned on my woodturning lathe & sprayed black.

I'm experimenting with positioning at the moment after a day of listening, does anyone have any specific recommendations? At the moment my spike shoes are going to wear trenches in my floor from sliding around!!! I'm 2,6m from them in a straight line. Thanks.

I'm wondering if the magnets may have had some metallic powder from the ball bearings you use with them as the toy & the iron bought it all to the front.

seems a shame to have them annoy with their stains. Also curious If the sealing/encapsulation is damaged or worn off? In which case the Neo material will noticably crumble into fairly toxic powder, with time and air contact.
I usually don't even try to hide Neos .
Just insetting them flush after finish work is complete.
A drop of Ca glue and a thumb push insertion. leaving the wee chrome dot as evidence of their presence. An interesting moderne visual.. if nothing else

It's done now but a lesson learned.

Another long listening/running in session planned for tomorrow!
