John Curl's Blowtorch preamplifier part II

Samuel Groner has done this ad nauseum from several angles, I would suggest starting with the best on his list. I suspect this will descend into, "but this op-amp has -102dB sevenths and that one is only -99dB", not very enlightening.

Well being on talking terms with JC what he is looking at is different and quite useful. It turns out there may be a minimum gain at which one may use an op amp to preserve S/N ratio. I'll let him muddle along learning how to use his SR1 and look at things from a different angle. Of course he expresses this in terms that are different than mine.

(BTY Scott before you mention optimizing gain structure for S/N, that is not it.)

:)

P.S. Scott turns out there actually are micro diodes! I mean the ones in the walls of the embassy in Moscow.

John, will you accept wish lists in your testing, of course, within reasonable limits, and only after you have tested for whatever you want to test for your own list?

Specifically, over the yeras, I have been surprised several times by how well som older op amps can be made to sound. OP37 is a good exmple. For years, I've been fooling around Philips and Marantz CD pleayers, and for reasons I cannot explain, in the end it alwas turns out that OP 275 comes out as the best sounding overll solution. And most owners of the said CD players seem to agree, as most have left them inside and called it a day.

I'd would REALLY love to hear your take on them.

Well since JC is busy doing interesting things, I will expand on what he has let me in on as long as it doesn't get Into his IP.

Now as soon as anyone adds a negative or insulting declarative comment I'll quit. To be even more annoying let's stick to the Socratic method.

Now anyone can participate if they are willing to answer questions. So to begin the most basic question would be what is JC best known for?

Well since the derogatory comments were phrased as questions, I'll continue, but with a warning that any derogatory comments will halt the process.

But since Max was serious, lets step back a bit and say audio circuitry. He has amplifiers, preamplifiers and phono stages (which today are a separate specialty.) So lets see who can apply a serious answer as to where the use of op amps would have most benefit and still have critical requirements?
