My ticket was picked in the raffle, with some help from the spirits(not the Captain Morgan in this case) . I picked the Planet 10 treated FF85's---plan to unite them in a vintage 15liter walnut cab with Silver Flute 8"/8ohm with 300hz x-over. Fleming took home the grand prize of the CSS MTM kit donated by Bob of Creative Sound Solutions.

Many thanks to our hosts, and especially our gracious hostess.

Back a few pages Cal said:

"Best in class hybrid. This is a box with a passive radiator. Since this engineering is far beyond my ability to understand, perhaps Howard, the proud owner will chime in here. That's a Fostex FE206E maybe?"

They did Jimmy B OK, Si Senor Cal?

I like to do innovative stuff, and sometimes it works. These horns with a passive radiator(dronecone to Cal) work well. Why there is still plenty of energy to power the horn, after much is radiated by the PR, I don't know. But Chris noted that he hadn't heard a 206e(outdoors in this case) make as much bass, except in truly large horns.

So maybe this could be a usable generalization: make a smaller horn and supplement it with output from a PR mounted into back side of the comp chamber. Get the horn sound in a smaller package. Maybe a compression chamber is not all about compression? Maybe the whole column actually drives, or resonates with, the PR somehow?

Maybe this is too much (quasi)tech for this thread?

No mention yet of John's amazing tube amp. There were other fine tube amps at the Fest, but John's big bread board really baked the goods to audio perfection.

As we were driving back, John mentioned that he had only listened to that amp 3 or 4 times. I got the idea that he had regarded the amp as being rather so-so in performance. One can only suspect that perhaps they weren't a good match with his home system or perhaps, speakers. He even admitted that they sounded pretty good up on the mountain. They may even get moved to a more prominent place in John's system.

I had a great time (as always) and only regret that some of the regulars weren't able to make it. I hope that all is well with those who weren't there.

To Ruth and Dave, my deepest appreciation for going so far out of their way in hosting this event and making everyone feel welcome. This next year I'll be working on regaining my strength and shedding some weight, so hopefully I can give Dave some help setting up for the event.

Chris deserves considerable credit as well. It's hard to list all that he does to help out. It would be far easier to mention what he didn't do: Cooking and going Topless during the event (unlike a couple of people that we could mention!). We can only express our graditude to Chris for being so thoughtful!
:D

Best Regards,
Captain "X"

generally takes more time to build them than to draw - we counted over 40prs on the deck before visitors starting arriving - of course some have had birthdays by now

That's another advantage to attending these meets is the chance to actually hear these designs in person. Many people are naturally reluctant to build, or purchase a pair of speaker without having heard them first.

Great fun!

Terry - indeed, I believe that's the major impediment for folks thinking about dipping their toes in the DIY field - whether it's amps, or speakers ( single driver or otherwise)

Dave / Ruth, any photos of the latest "FAST" designs?

As for John's 6BG4 P/P amp - too bad there was room on the return ride for both it and Rene's hybrid amp - we should have fixed the raffle so he was forced to leave something behind :)

As many others have said, it was a great time as always.
There was lots of interesting audio gear, the food was wonderful, and the company was great. Dave and Ruth are at the top of the list. Hospitality there is top notch!

Pictures soon. Maybe after supper . . .
:)

Dave

Sorry guys, but 2 "half-Monty's" won't make a Full Monty!

Ladies . . . in the future, you'll need to get your dollars out for more than this!
