O2 amp parts GB, EU

Hi,

I think I will have a couple of spare kits/cases/transformers.
But I will have to wait for all the shipments to reach me, before I can be sure.
(All "customer" orders come first, if any parts are missing/defective, mine are the first kits to be "delayed".)

I will put up the next GB sometime in the next week or so, after I have taken care of everything regarding this one.
Thats just so I can stay focused and avoid any mistakes...
And the second one should be quicker since the structure and workflow is existing and improved for me.
Prices should be similar to this one, maybe a little (as in single-digit range) more expensive to cover my time put into it.

Regards,
Jokener

I'll see what I have left over after I decide how many O2's I want to build for myself.

(I have 15+ kits, ~12 cases and ~15 transformers and will be building what looks like 1x desktop, 1x mobile, 1x Sanyo-powered mobile, 1x fairydust-edition, 1x mil-spec edition, 1x girlfriend amp and 1x crazy mod edition.)
Depending on how many I burn and break while tinkering, there should be a few left.
But I can't comment on what colors will be left over, because I'll color-code my own units ^^

Regards,
Jokener

You can go to the BOM via the link in my first post in this thread.
There you can see all the exact Mouser numbers.
Choose the part you are interested in and copy&paste it to the Mouser search box.
You will be shown a product page with all the informations and, in most cases, a link to a PDF datasheet or catalog-page.

The mil-spec edition is basically the same as the standard, but it uses only components with a military spec rating.
(Resistors are closer to their rated resistance than the regular parts and so on.)
This one will cost me ~80€ in parts.

The fairydust-edition uses only parts from highly acclaimed audio-companies.
So, for example, Mundorf will of course be present.
My order on this one is not done yet, so I can't give you much more specific information.
This unit will cost me ~120€ in parts.

And in the crazy mod edition, I am basically planning to burn one set of pieces.
I may be an engineer, but by no means of the electrical kind and there is a reason I don't design my own amps.
I KNOW my limitations. But sometimes its fun to overshoot them without giving a damn.
And thats what I'll do here. I have certain mods in my mind that should add interesting tweaks to the O2.
There is no expectation on my part for this unit to outperform a stock O2 in any way, shape or form.
Its a purely educational excercise and will be thoroughly tested before I let any expensive headphones near it.
And this one will be ~60€ in parts.

Jokener

OMFG... Mouser and Farnell are really driving me nuts.
Sending in some form of ID to create a new customer account, then EU money transfers even though the German subsidiary HAS to have a bank account (they have people working there, and I doubt they get their salaries from the UK)...
And even though I have an account for their online store with personal information and everything, I still need to FAX (never used that before ^^) my personal details again.
Explain why shipping and billing address are not the same...

It can only take a century, maybe two...
Orders should be done in a couple of days.
(It only takes so long, because the people there seem to be taking breaks quite frequently. I called Farnell three times today, the 'new customers'-lady was on a break every time. It's 1pm now... good times.)

Regards,
Jokener, who is taking a break now ^^

A bit of the same here, albeit much less severe. Although originally, a 14 mm long plug was proposed by the transformer manufacturer on the phone, they now propose a 9 mm long plug due to easier supply of that one. That would be okay (even preferable), only if the power jack's front was flush with the front panel. But it's not, the jack is behind the front panel. That calls for a longer plug, otherwise it will keep falling out due to not being inserted fully in the jack.

For a custom transformer, I think it is not unreasonable to push for one that ticks all the boxes. I have explicitly requested for the plug to be 14 mm now, I hope to get a response before the weekend. I'll keep you all informed.

@NicMac: Nope. It will be a "little black one" to match her leather jacket.
But this one will get a custom CNC-machined enclosure to eliminate air inside the O2.
(Actually, to round off all the edges and make it look like a sphere, compressed to 1/3 its height...)
The other sheet-metal desing didnt turn out precise enough because the bench press was too large.
And I just didnt feel like driving another 80 miles to get new metal and then spend another day in the shop to build a mini-press (which would cost me 100€ in parts)...
Maybe, in a long and cold winter night, I'll wander around the shop and see the drawing for the press... who knows what happens then?

@Timpert: Are you sure the jack is behind the panel?
They are color-coded. Why would that be if they were behind the panel?
Maybe we should ask RocketScientist about this?

Regards,
Jokener

Are you sure the jack is behind the panel?

See the picture on RS's "O2 details" page, there's a top view of the board on which this can be clearly seen. The connector on the BOM is black, and has a square front so that would be a bit cumbersome to drill if you want to get it flush with the panel. Only the input/output jacks are color coded by the PC99 colors.

Edit: you can also see it on the PCB's floorplan in the "enclosure options" section.

Ok... So it seems Farnell has shipped the first part of the order.
The online shop said everything was 'in stock'.
But the rest should be here by 'week 40', which is in two weeks.
Since nothing is as it seems with these orders, I'll just wait and see what I get ^^

Regards,
Jokener

I don't think that the final price will deviate significantly from the price mentioned earlier, if at all. The only thing that we're still sorting out is the plug. The transformer company is not really quick in their replies, but they have always come through with an adequate response, so I trust that this one will be OK too.

It's just that PayPal charges me 35+ cents for each payment.
So if someone sends 1,5€ now and we find out shipping is more expensive and the company wants 0,5€ more because the sun is shining today...
If people send money twice, PayPal will be very happy, but nobody else.

And because I already collected the shipping costs, I have a cushion that I can use to pre-pay the transformers even if they cost more than "my" 15€-unit (the one that delivers 11.5V).

Regards,
Jokener

Now I'm sure: There is method to the madness!
Farnell just shipped the second part of the order.
The part that was suddenly 'not in stock' anymore and should be shipped in 'week 40'? Yeah... Apparently they found it again and it's now shipping. From the United States.
Even some parts that are in stock in Germany.
I will just say nothing, shut up and smile. Everything is peachy :)

Now we're waiting for Mouser to check their bank account and find our money in there.

I am just praying that everything gets here and that the shipments will be as complete as the online system claims them to be.
And if you would like to track the orders, here you go: One aaaand Two.
The third one doesn't have a tracker...

Another piece of information: I just picked up my order of conductive foam.
1 square meter should suffice for all the orders.
And in case it doesn't: My local dealer now has it stocked and another 2 square meters reserved for me for the next two weeks.

Regards,
Jokener
