Marantz CD63 & CD67 mods list

After some teething problems, that I think are solved, and another 50 hours of burn-in, I can sit down and appreciate all the work that Brent has put into my 67'. The problems in question had me totally freaked and i'm not sure I still understand, but it seems to have been related to an extreem sensitivity to contact surface between the power plug and the diy sockets/extention I made. It would stop, power off, refuse to start etc. Be aware that the tolerance for tight, clean mains connection makes a big difference with these medded players (as if you didn't already know!) It may have to do with the increased voltage that Brent has applied or sensitivity of the S'regs. I don't know but even the sound changed when I redid the socket. Anyway this is by way of a mini review of what you can expect from a heavily modded player vs a stock one. In this case a 67se (sorry I was calling it a 63' in the past because I didn't look closely) against my standard 67 à la Brent/Ray. To say the differences are startling would be an an understatement. Take a reference quality recording; my favorite being Steely Dan's "Two against Nature"...(which shows what can be done in a recording studio when you care and have ears).
The stock player is barely listenable. It's rough, flat, aggresive, two dimensional, clotted, monochromatic etc...in comparison. Coming from mine it's a completely engrossing experience. Every instrument, every moment, is in a seperate envelope of sound; with it's individual texture, dynamic, tonality, and everything holds together as a coherant whole. The visual analogy is very appropriate; it's like changing from a low resolution screen to one with a much wider palate of colours and density.I wouldn't call this level of modification very tolerant. It doesn't flatter. Great is great, bad is still bad. But it is forgiving in the sense that the musical content manages to come thru, as well as the emotional one. So modification is not just an intellectual excercize, to see how far one can improve over an original, cost-cutting design, although that is surely very facinating, but gets the music back the way it was intended. One problem I've always had with this player was a tendancy to harden up and get shrill on certain passages (voices, brass notably). That seems to have been cured. I turned up Steely Dan LOUD, and it just tracks effortlessly. One problem that hasn't been cured though is probably inherant in the chip; the bass is still not as articulate and finely rendered as the rest. Perhaps Brent's latest creation (the external power supply) addresses this but I will never know :(
So I am very pleased and I encourage all to continue their mods and from time to time report on the SOUND, in addition to the rest.

My CD63Ki have this tray problem from time to time. Pressing the OPEN/CLOSE button on the player or remote, the tray comes out half way and then goes in again quickly! Sometimes it works properly. Appreciate if any "Gurus" out there who can help. Thanks

I think that's the drive belt that's worn. You'll have to replace it.

Hi! Guys do you have a diagram for this DYI modification of CD 63MKII KI?...TIA!

Lot's of schematics and modification lists can be found here on my website.

I've been playing around trying to layout peranders regulator design for DIYing, and also at laying out Ray's clock. Is there any mileage in trying to combine the 2 (in place of the power supply in Ray's clock)?

The standard supply is pretty basic, and not the lowest noise on the planet, so this clock may benefit from a better supply. I'd say give it a try!

Regards,

Ray

Everything will always benefit from a better supply!!!!!!!!

abba omg musical torture did my first track day diddnt bin it :D mallory plowed field wtf black gates take thier time dont they gettin better tho .
Nice one! Couple of mates did the new Snetteron 300 on Monday. I missed out cos I didn't get my **** into gear! Just doing the fork seals now!!!! :(

I suggest you read a few of the last 10 or 20 pages first, as your question has been answered numerous times already recently. Reading the whole thread is a monstrous job .

Now you tell it!! After I have read first 100 pages!
I should have a cd-42 somewhere, bought it for a spare laser some time ago. Is it even near cd63/67?

I'm currently trying to get it onto a single sided board to be able to etch myself (or get a friend to for me) using the laser print onto photo paper technique, so it may not be as good a layout as it could be.

Sure, welcome to this thread! You found the right place, that's a start!

You could have known... the oldest stuff is at the beginning :D

The CD42 is a whole different player, with the SAA7350 DAC. Not really fantastic, the CD63/67 family is better.

Yes, it will be just as good. The CD53/63 and 63mkII or KI all have the same board inside.

My cd53 sound very good after I put in big cap at cd814 ,cd813 & bypass fuses. Decide to improve it I add common filter(Farnell 969-4234) & change cd004 cd007 cd510 cd511 to 470 uf blackgate Nx.Previously all are 220uf.The player now is not as dynamic as before after the later mod. (Been running for 3weeks).What could be the problem? Please Advice,Thanks in advance.

You need a parallel mains filter instead. They don't raise the mains impedance. Put a 2.2 - 10uf 630Vdc Polypropylene (or X2) capacitor and a 100K res across Live and Neutral for a simple but effective filter. Larger the uF the better.

Brent
Thank you, Brent. Is it ok to use Mundorf Supreme? Can I use 1/4 watt resistor?
