Interestingly, the first few years that I covered BAF for audioXpress, nobody apparently noticed.
Now that someone writes about esoteric cables, there's pages and pages of posts.

Hmmm... What's the lesson for me to be learned here? ;)

jan didden

fact is that you're fact on DiyA

why should we praise you .......

same as we praise furniture

I never felt lacquered, impregnated or otherwise :p

jan didden

but have you been "shellac'd", or have you had your "wroth waxed"?

The first term is now political, the last term takes an intimate knowledge of the Marx Bros. to understand.

It wasn't that bad. Given that the pages of SPhile are quick to denigrate physicists, preferring phenomenologists, it isn't surprising.

When I went to work this morning I found a copy of Stereophile waiting for me on my bench that a friend of mine left for me yesterday. Reading through the article I found these nuggets:

"My first delights were the fabulous soundstage and timberally perfect higher frequencies produced by Bill Berndt's turntable,...phono stage, EF86 linestage and 6V6 push-pull amplifier." Geez, what a jerk.

"...I sat in awe in a room dominated by Linkwitz's open-baffled loudspeakers. Available in kit form from Wood Artistry, these moderately sized speakers created perhaps the most dynamic-sounding presentation from cd I have ever heard." Boy, what a cocksucker this guy is.

"In one corner of a third room, Demian Martin and Ray Burnham demonstrated their bargain-of-the-year Auraliti music server... available in kit form as well as completely assembled, the Auraliti's superior organizing abilities attracted lots of questions... Man, what a condescending little prick.

I'm with you guys. Stereophile should just stay away.

Hey, it was the old Aunt Corey's Buffered passive Preamp article that got me involved.

Great article.

Wonder what Elvis is doing these days? :D

Mmmmmm, lacquered felt

Ummm.... how shall I put this.... Jason doesn't have a wife and is unlikely to ever have one. Not that there's anything wrong with that...

I thought we were discussing diyaudio's Jason. In which case I would say he is a very intelligent man.

However I now realise we are talking about Stereophile's Jason. In which case I would say what woman would want to listen to his BS.

I read Stereophile because I like it. It's certainly not perfect, but it presents information I like as well as the high-end "audio porn" that is necessary to keep itself alive as a physical print magazine in this blogging age. Usually, though, the out-and-out disrespect is reserved for remarks-in-passing between Mike Fremer and Sam Tellig.

I think it is great that Burning Amp has become enough of an event that it got Stereophile's attention. As I read through the article, though, and started to realize that the author had little respect for the gathering and was going to make sure everyone knew it, I was really disappointed. I think it is good that the two worlds intersected - heaven knows that all of us in the decent-audio-tribe need all the friends we can get - but it's a shame about the outcome. The tone of the article, especially, seemed to completely miss the point that the basis of audio DIY is for people to have a good time sharing audio knowledge. I mean, we're playing with sound reproduction here, not trying to keep North Korea in check or stop global warming.

Nelson's sense of humor and (dare I presume) joy in life is what makes this particular forum so special, with it's underlying current of humor and good humor. The Stereophile article, alas, had no joy nor sense of humor.

I have written a few emails to John Atkinson over the years, and he has always replied, and I respect that. I suspect I will see what the sense of this thread turns out to be, and then send him an email about it. I think it would be good if Burning Amp and Stereophile got together again next year, but maybe with a little more focus and sympathy, and will probably end up saying something like that in my email.

Not to mention that ZM will be there in 2011! ;)

I put some 169,5 Euro on side ; will make these days Halcro amp with that money ;

I can build that even for less , but - hey - I feel as big spender these days .....

:devily:

( I confess - I like mags , even today ; they're good humorous literature .
but I don't like some sellers , especially some circles around my tiny place in Universe ..... :devilr: )

It's not as if SPhile is re-writing the Pentateuch or something -- my advice to you, young man, is to spend the difference between the cost of something like the HMN Phono Preamp and the Sutherland (reviewed in the same issue) and buy some tix for the Concertgebouw or Carnegie Hall.

As Moses has written "Use CAT5 cable and invest the difference in lottery tickets".
