DIY F2 clone

So, I've been listening to the f2-j(diy) for about a week now. I already said it sounds great, but it sounds REALLY great! Initial A/B listening comparisons (I changed one channel and did some comparisons between the two) weren't conclusive. I honestly couldn't just hear much of a difference. But after living w/ it for the past week, i'd say the amp is way easier to listen to, if that makes sense. (I guess something to do w/ amount and type of distortion)

I always compared the f2(diy) to my SET amp. Listening tests always resulted in the f2(diy) being the best sounding solid state amp we'd heard, but somehow the tube amp always got put back in place in the end. They were close, and it was nothing anyone could really describe, but the SET was just a little better.
Well, now the f2-j(diy) is the clear winner.. (figuratively and literally)
It's sort of sad to admit! I loved my tubes :)

Thanks again to Papa Pass, and everyone in the forums who helped when I built the thing last year, and now to tbag for getting this batch of jfets!!

Me too!!!

Done! Now I am listenig to my new F2 clone driving Visaton B200 fullrange on OB. Very happy with it, sounds nice (and very proud: my first DIY ampli! :))
Thanxs Nelson for sharing and everyone in the tread for suggestions.
Sure I have some question for you experienced DIYers but now is time to listen, enjoy, end, as Nelson said "educate my ears" ...

Hi Davide, do you have tweeter with your B200? How's the high frequency response with F2 compared to voltage amp? Regards.

Hi Ipanema, no tweeter. Compared to voltage amplifier (plus EQ by Behringer DEQ2496) bass are present and very thigth, peak in midrange reduced a lot.
Maybe a little reduction in hights but I have to listen more ... I will tell you further impressions.
Next step: compensation network (has anyone tried for B200?)
B200 driven by previous voltage amplifier (not bad Atoll Electronique int.) without EQ were hard to listen to.
It seems to me that F2 matches very good B200.
To be continued ... :)
Bye

Hi Ipanema,
definitely I confirm my first impressions: higher frequencies are a bit less in B200 driven by F2 then by voltage amplifier.
Since I can't see a reason for this behavior maybe the richness in bass and middle-bass and the sweetness of the sound leads to the perception of less highs. What's your opinion?
BTW have you got a Visaton B200?
Bye,
Davide

I tried with about 16 ohm in parallel. B200 sounds a little different with deep bass extension recordings: bass is more focused and controlled. I can't honestly perceive an improvement in high frequencies response. I have to say that my favourite music is medieval-renaissance-early baroque and with a good recording the result is really outstanding! No real need to improve extension: I try to hack the system only to learn and make experience.
I thought to play with a grafic EQ to obtain the sound I like and then choose the values for the compensation network so that its frequency response is similar to EQ curve. Than, if necessary, try to adjust values.
Is it a correct approach?

@Ipanema
For my experience, give B200 a try: they are not expensive; female voices, strings, harpsichord are really surprising!

Davide

Yes. It will tone down the bottom end a bit.

Hi Mr. Pass,

you were so generous to implement the SSR100 in the design of F1 and F2!
I am just building a F1J and this evening I will enjoy the sound!

Would it be possible for you to give a hint for the changes in the pre Aleph P 1.7? (the circuit is very similar)

I suppose this could be an overwhelming action when I only think of the people in my surrounding using still an P 1.7!

considering that you need certain amount of Iq through them ( even using '550) - it's hardly wise to make another power amp in disguise

also capacitance isn't issue for avoiding , so sort of cascoding is probably nice to implement

naah - if you like P1.7 - use same mosfets you use in Pumpie now ..... and cascode them

that's furthest I would go with P1.7 tweaks

beyond that - I would make another pre ........ which you already did ...... did ....... did ....

Hi Zen Mod, :) the fastest electronic guide in universe :)

you are in good condition and revealing all my hidden aspects  .. I am really glad to hear your inimitable way of commenting things again .:D:D:D:D.........

Mr. Pass you could answer nevertheless ............

by the way Zen Mod the next pre could be an Impasse, I have to get used to high tension...:yikes:
