The BAF was a blast.

I enjoyed demonstrating my amp, but it sounded a bit strained. Later, I discovered that the speakers available were 16 ohm. This meant my amp was only putting out maybe one watt, or so, instead of three watts. It sounded as if it were clipping a tad. Still, people were tolerant and showed appreciation for my attempts.

What a lovely crowd.

"......we missed you SY!......"

SY wasn't there ? Gosh ,I hope you will be there next year ?

Where are all the pictures ( lots of it ) and the reports ? Doesn't have to be just one report. Everyone there could give their own opinions as there WILL be many opinions ! If everyone had the same opinion then DIY will be DEAD as a DODO ! I hope it wasn't so .
I'm busy with :drink::drink::drink:
:D
waiting to see the reports ! You guys are killing us with the delay. Are you all ( who attended ) drunk too ?
Cheers.

I made it to BA for a few hours in the afternoon and was able to meet a few people, see some cool gear and catch Nelson Pass' speech and demonstration. As a complete neophyte to the DIY audio scene, I was pretty blown away by what I saw and heard...

I'll leave the details of NP's latest amp to the master (what do I know about it anyway!) It might suffice to say that he designed a very interesting amp, geared towards getting people like me off the fence and wielding a soldering iron. I may just do so!

Personally, I was most impressed by his open baffle speakers, particularly when they were loaded with the Feastrex drivers, though the Lowthers were impressive as well for a bit at least. He had an active crossover, with an F5 (perhaps?) driving 15" Eminence bass drivers, and a J2 driving the 8" Feastrex full-rangers. The conditions, setup and hall were far less than ideal, but holy cow was the sound ever glorious. I don't think I've ever heard such realistic cymbal sounds coming from a (decidedly un-boxy) speaker...

Anyway, I'm really glad that I made it. Many thanks to the organizers, NP and the rest of the community. I'm quite tempted to try my hand at a simple amp now, and even more so to give some big, wide-open baffles a try.

I didn't care for the feastrex at all. I did like the Lowther Field coils, but they did not sound night and day better than ordinary lowthers. Great listening place....No.

Here is more on not so secret, unnamed depletion mosfet amp. Muted on startup and shutdown. I thought it was very lively sounding. worth building.

It's not secret, we're just being polite and giving Nelson the opportunity to spill the beans on his own creation, just as he promised he would at BA. After all, he came up with this thing on Saturday afternoon. Don't joggle the master's elbow. The muting mentioned was very manual, via clip leads. If I was connecting my amp to speakers that cost as much as the mortgage on many houses, I'd do the same.

Thank You all for coming! It was my favorite BAF so far. I managed to DELEGATE this year. It's well and good to say to delegate, but the people you delegate to must be able to do what needs to be done and anticipate what you, the guests will enjoy.

This year I had two Danish volunteers who are living in San Francisco for a year. They would be Christian (cviller) who took over the general coordination, but especially kept the auditions in the big room on track- as much as they can be!

Then on the food front, we had Natasja, who served the breakfast, snacks and coffee donated by Elektor magazine. She then got the burgers and other lunch items purchased, cooked and served with some help by others- including Christian above, who happens to be her husband.

I was then free much of the time to talk to people I've now gotten to know over the three shows, and of course coordinate the doorprizes, auctions and parts giveaways.
