Ok, as promised in my SFE812 speaker build thread, I built a PA465S 18" subwoofer to go along with the SFE812 towers I built.

The reason I added this was that I was looking for more bass at higher SPL than the Mag 12's were able to deliver. The Mag12 really like a high pass around 30-40hz (as Eminence recommends for most of their midbass 12" as well), and with that the lower bass energy in the 30-50hz range isn't as loud as it could be. Again, no knock on the Mag12, I am absolutely IN LOVE with this driver and will be using it in more builds moving forward.

Subwoofer

I started with the really nice Dayton PA465S 18" PA subwoofer, this driver is really nice for the money and I had quite a good time fondling it while I was planning and building the enclosure. =)

Enclosure

After doing quite a bit of simulating in winISD, I ended up with a 4.5 cubic foot enclosure tuned to 30hz. Since I'm not using this for HT, I wasn't too concerned about 30hz and below, really what I'm looking for is that "chest slam" in the 40-100hz range.

The enclosure is heavily braced 3/4" Maple plywood, the whole thing with subwoofer weighs in at a pretty svelte 75lbs, the driver alone is 35lbs of that. The ports are 4" ID, approx 9" long each, tuned to 32hz with Dats. Finish is red Varathane stain with Minwax semigloss poly. The enclosure is lined with 1.5" egg crate foam with some light poly stuffing behind the driver to dampen any back waves. Enclosure is solid and non-resonant, no issues with it moving or walking with the rubber feet.

I used two filters in miniDSP to flatten out response, it is very flat to 30hz near field at over 110DB/1meter, in room in my listening position it is flat to below 20hz easily at up to 100db.

The Sound

I'm very pleased with how this turned out! Visually it's fun seeing all the cabinets together, audibly the bass of the system is substantially more powerful, but very tight and accurate. At volumes of 85-90db and higher in the listening position, bass really slams you in the chest, you feel it vibrating the shirt on your arms and thumping you in your lungs. I now have the Mag12's running harder in their ideal operating range as well so they're putting out very strong and high output SPL in the 60-150hz range.

I am running this subwoofer on a bridged Adcom GFA-555 so it's getting about 600 watts, frankly this is the minimum power this subwoofer seems to like, it will hit very high volumes at this power level but I'm day dreaming of what it would sound like with 1600 watts (Like a Crown XLS 2500.

I am currently running the Mag12 and 18" overlapping, I have a subsonic on the 18" at 20hz, one at 30hz on the Mag12, 18" runs up to 80hz, Mag12 runs up to 150hz.

Here is the nearfield frequency response, mic is centered on the Seos10 horn.

Very nice! Are the pictures of the speakers in the final position in your room? What is the size and volume of your space? Must be pretty big space for the 2 magnum 12 to be strained at the bottom octave.

Yes that's the listening position, the "room" is basically open to the rest of the 3k^2 ft house so yea, really large area.

If you don't mind and you can share with me the Ts input that you used as well as the inputs for WINisd . I purchased three of them when they first came out but the specs have changed so much that I can't seem to find a good balance after hours of modeling it thank you very much.

I used specs listed currently on PE's site and in their file, modeled well for what I wanted (flat to 30hz) in 4.5 and 30hz, 6-7 seemed ideal but I just didn't want that big of an enclosure.

HTH!
